How is everyone's radio reception?

I just replaced my HU and have pretty crappy reception. I did NOT use a Y cable and mini to regular antenna adapter for the second antenna.
I will try this next.
I have much better reception in our Marinette boat (all aluminum hull, decks, and superstructure) with an 18 inch diversity wire antenna behind the lower helm.
Both HU are Kenwood.
I will be investigating better radio reception as well.

My radio reception is pretty sucky. Lots of static on local stations that come in crisp on every other car I've driven. Since it does have an aftermarket head I'm hoping just a connection issue behind it.
Doing some searching on google and there seems to be some sort of common issue with it.

Do you happen to know which factory wire that would be?
The "Radio Upgrades" is where I remember reading something about it but that thread is pretty big now.

It differs on the radios.
In my case, I had the Ltd. JBL Synthesis system and it was the black wire on the harness.
I put a meter on the radio and checked for the switched B+ to confirm.
Then once it was hooked up, all was good.

XM runs off it's own antenna independent of the other.
Connect a switched 12 volt to the black wire.

I have the JBL and get great reception, my apartment has a underground parking garage and I can listen to quite a few stations on the radio with a little bit of static on the first level where I park. My previous car was straight static.
I upgraded my HU to a Pioneer and used it with only one antenna plugged in for a couple of weeks. The signal strength was not great and I experienced some loss of signal in lower lying areas. I couldn't pick up any AM stations at all.
I bought the two into one adapter and tore everything apart and installed it. The signal strength improved only a little bit and still don't have really any AM station coverage. The HD channels come in pretty clear most of the time but when the signal is weak, it bounces to analog sound and won't display the artist and song info, album art, etc.

Someone mentioned hitting the antenna amplifier with switched power, but I have no clue where it's at in the vehicle.
TBH, I would probably not get another Pioneer HU, if you are using the app function for Waze, you can't listen to the radio anyway, everything has to come through the USB connection or bluetooth. Pretty frustrating to find that out...after you've bought and installed it all. If you don't need local radio it's a non issue.

my reception was great until i changed head units from stock to a kenwood single din. stations that were crystal clear don't even break through the static. been that way for a few years now
Pretty much describes my pioneer unit except the adapter bringing the two antennas together made mine worse.
