How large of a camper can I tow w/my 05 V6 runner?

What size camper are you guys currently towing with your V6 4runner? Any issues to be aware of?


I'm not looking at anything large but I don't want a popup.

My V8 is rated for 7500 lbs, however 19-24 ft is all I am comfortable with otherwise it will drive you. Take in consideration the height and width of the trailer; this will create drag. I have done a lot of research as we were in a Pop Up for 12 years and are upgrading to a Hybrid/TTL. With the 19 foot Coleman Hybrid I will not require anti-sway, anything longer than say 21 ft and you will want to add that. As for power and torque it is my undrstanding the V6 has plenty to tow with. There is a lot of info out there and a few of the members here tow campers so I am sure you will get some more info. Your V6 is rated for 5000 lbs, IIRC. Realize, however, that a camper that weighs 4000 lbs dry, may well be over 5000 lbs by the time you add water, food, luggage, etc.

It all depends on the type of trailer, how much weight you have in the truck, and the terrain you tow in.

See sig pic. I have a 19' hybrid, 3200lbs empty weight(3800 loaded to camp) with about 500lbs of people in the T4R. Well within the tow limits but my '03 V6 struggled with the drag and wind resistance from the frontal area of a full size (even tho this trailer is only 7.5' wide compared to most at 8') Holding 55mph on flat highway felt like a chore with even the slightest headwind. You'll need to keep it in 3rd gear to minimize tranny strain which revs high and doesn't leave power/gear to hill climb or pass. I'm sure it will do it all day long and some people will be ok with it (I've seen people tow larger with Siennas) but if you want to be comfortable, keep it under 3500lbs loaded and under 20'. You'll definately want a WD hitch with sway control and will need to upgrade your stock hitch to a frame mount which can accept a WDH (stock is only mounted to x-member)

As a side note, I only lasted 3 short trips towing with my V6 before I had had enough and upgraded to a V8 T4R. More torque and better gearing with the 5speed made all the difference in the world!
