How long does a timing belt last?

I would run a OE belt for as long as I want, not with non OE.

Just replaced the original with 230k on the 96 my GF just bought. It would’ve gone 300k no problem I bet. The water pump wasn’t even leaking.

On our first 97 Limited we finally had the timing belt changed at 230,000.
On our "new" 97 limited and 98 SR5 I have all the stuff to do timing and water pump on them both. 160000 and 230000 respectively. Getting them done this week. I am using all Toyota parts.

One thing you can do is inspect your belt by removing the upper cover, easy to do. Purchase your parts OE on Ebay, don't let the shop provide parts, shop will mark them up. Parts cost is under $300 for all you will need.

So I'll need to remove my radiator again to to remove the upper cover and check the belt correct? Also thanks for the reminder on the parts. I plan on getting the 15 Piece genuine OE parts kit from aircabinman when the time comes.

No way do you need to remove Rad. You remove 6 bolts for the #2 T/B cover, hose clamp at engine slide it back toward Rad, cover will move enough to see a third of T/B. Bump the engine over with key to see the other 2/3rd's. Search for the 96-02 4R factory service manual it is very helpful, sorry I don't have a link, you may find it on this forum.

Here's mine at 160k, in the process of changing it now with all the common other parts while I'm in there including crank/cam seals. My water pump was not leaking, Using OEM/Aisin kit.

Also doing valve cover gaskets, fan clutch, Tundra Brake upgrade, got about a month before I take it round trip from Canada to Florida.

Yeah, I really don't know why you'd want to push it past the 100-120K mark.....
