How many 3rd Gens?

Does anyone know how many 3rd Gens were produced in total? Not sure about the rest of the country, but they are all over New England. I did some searching and couldn't find a number. Any ideas or guesses?

I don't have exact numbers, I am sure it is easy to pull up. I know they did quite well, nothing like the Ford Explorer, but the 4Runner sold around 100,000 here in the states each year. Some years were past 100,000, sometimes not. If I had to guess, maybe 750,000 or so over the 7 years it was made.

I know the Explorer could break the 400,000 mark each year during it's hay day. The Ford Explorer was also the most traded in car during the Gas guzzler rebates, not a great thing to be known for.

I though I remember seeing numbers on that someplace. I recall the numbers falling off quite a bit towards the end of the 3rd gen life span.

Well, crude went from $12 and change in 1998 to almost $28 in 2000. It doesn't sound like much now, but SUV sales in general cooled off (like right after I bought mine in early '99).

Really? I thought that I remember the early 2000's being sort of the height of the big and useless SUV. Kinda figured that's why the 4th gens were bigger.

2003 109,308
2004 114,212
2005 103,830
2006 103,086
2007 87,718
2008 47,878
2009 19,675

The 4th Gens started out really well, but dropped off a LOT towards the end.

Yeah. To me that makes more sense from what I remember. It wasn't until the last few years that the SUV market really tanked in my opinion.

Your guess was awesome!
749,871 3rd gen 4Runners

Yeah, I added it up and thought wow, that was pretty close to my 750,000 guess. I also heard that the 4Runner was the best selling SUV until 2001 and then the Highlander took over. I think the RAV4 won a few months, but the 4Runner was basically the bread winner during the 3rd generation model years until 2001. Since then, it has never been the best selling Toyota SUV. Those crossovers are taking over.:moon:
