How many CV Axles have you broken?

Last night I was out wheeling in the first snowfall of the year and I was trying to climb up some fairly big hills which required quite a bit of the old skinny pedal. Unbeknownst to me, the throttle got stuck half open and the 3.4 continued to roar as I failed the climb just before cresting the hill. My rig is double-locked, so it started to shoot sideways rapidly in the snow. I shifted the old pig into neutral, floored it, put my foot behind the pedal pulling it back out, and it started to slowly rev back down. I started to slide crooked towards a drop-off, so I shifted it into reverse to try and save it. I didn't know it, but the throttle was still stuck roughly a quarter of the way. BOOM, the passenger's side CV exploded. I was able to safely (with a lovely metallic banging that shook the rig) get it down the hill with the mid-shaft being stuck on top of the inner half-shaft. I cut the mid-shaft off with my portable angle grinder and made it off the mountain with 3WD.

This is a story that shows how I got lucky in a sticky situation. Quite a bit more damage could have happened from shifting it with the throttle stuck open. This isn't my best story or anything, but it is the 8th CV I have destroyed. If people want to hear them, I would be happy to share some of the others too.

To be fair, the CV didn’t break just causes…. You reversed direction of operation….. Just saying.

I’ve been around countless throttle cable issues over the years on different machines. None of them ever just happened, at least to me anyway. There were always warning signs. Did you have any warning signs prior to your failure? I’ll bet that one had some pucker factor.

I just ordered two new Napa 1258's. My passenger side, aftermarket, is pretty toast. Boot ripped wide open, no grease, just hanging on. Driver side is OEM but the boot is ripped, but not as bad as the other side. With 308K on my rig, I'm going ahead and replacing both at the same time. With new axle seals from Toyota, too. Hopefully will be the last time I have to do them (fingers crossed) since I'm not wheeling my rig anymore these days

Do you have a link to the ones you ordered? I tried putting in 1258 into NAPA and came up with nothing.

Ha, I had a stash of 5 CV axles all waiting to go... I sold the 3 spares I had as backups, and these are the two newest ones I had that were on my 4Runner before going to LT.
