how many gallons?

ive got a 02 jw wondering how many gallons are in the tank...and also when that warning light comes on how much do i have left?

That is about right, when my light comes on and I get gas, it takes 16.5 gallons.
 
3rd gen fuel guages are very inconsistent and can't be measured by other's results. If I filled mine up when the light came on I'd only squeeze in 14.5 but most of the time when it reads pretty close to empty I still only fill it up with 16 gallons at the most.


And if you did run your Runner dry it still would have just under 2 gallons in the tank since the pump doesn't sit right on the bottom.

Gauges were inconsistent, they fixed them by 2001. "burton6509" has a 2002, so his gauge should be like mine.

If your gauge reads empty at 16 gallons, you still have 2.5 gallons left. All 3rd generation models have the same size tank, 18.5 gallons. I know there is a TSB for this, but most owners just live with their inaccurate gauge.

Once, I got 400 miles to one tank and it took 17.6 gallons, so at least for me, I don't have a problem with the pump running dry when you have 2 gallons left.
 
all I can ever get in mine is like fifteen MAYBE sixteen at the very most, so I'm really no where near running out of gas when the light comes on, good/bad to know

Are you one of those guys that fills it up even in the neck of the tank? Plus 2wd mileage can't be compared to 4wd mileage. I've never fit more than 16.3 in my tank and that was low.
 
Ya my 98 , have only been able to squish about 15.5 in it and thats when the lights been on for around 15 miles

Peter78, so you're saying it's a fact that all 3rd gens have the same size tank? I'm not doubting you, I just thought all '96-'00 4Runners had 16.5 gal tanks and all '01-'02 4Runners came equipped w/ larger, 18.5 gal tanks.

I've personally owned a '98 & '99 4Runner and with both tanks run almost completely dry, I was only able to squeeze 15.8 gals back in them. My wife drives an '00 4Runner and the same goes for her 4Runner. Yet w/ my '02, I've actually been able to get 17 gals in it before. Therefore, I've always assumed the '01 & '02 4Runners just came w/ larger tanks...I had no idea about the TSB for this.

That's right. That means in fact, your 98 had about 3 gallons left even though your gauge showed your were EMPTY.

Here are the specs for a 1996. Notice the size of the tank. It says and I quote: "Fuel Tank: 18.5 gal'.

i have a 99, and ive been able to get it to fill up to about 17 gallons, that was after running for a while with the light on...so i figured it was about 18 gallons...

now i havent seen a full gas tank in a few weeks, im so broke! lol
 
Yes, I know my 98 had a 18 gal tank. Right when the light came on, I was right around 15 gallons for a full fill-up (not topping it off, either). I'm not 100% positive on this, but I've heard that most auto manuf. try to have the gas light come on right when the vehicle has about 50-60 miles worth of fuel left. Anyone confirm this?

Also, about the TSB on the fuel guage on the older 4Runners, I have never heard of that either. But I know that it wasn't the most accurate, but then again, no fuel gauge is that accurate. I usually try and fill up every 200 miles, anyway.
 
Man all I was saying is that when the light comes on and stays on, u should have about 2 gallons left! Look in your owners manual if you don't believe me on the 18.5 gallons, you could put 19 or 19.3 if you top it off.

Warning:topping off your fuel is a bad thing as it will ruin your evaporative emissions sytem and saturate your charcoal canister which isn't a cheap part to buy from the dealer.

There needs to be nothing in the neck of the tank so the air can expand. The tank does hold 18.5 but even if you run your tank til your engine dies there still will be over a gallon of gas in the tank since the pump doesn't sit on the bottom since it would pull in sediments thus they aren't designed that way.

I let it "click" once and then I fill til it "clicks" again and I can hear it run down the neck and it's full to me. I usually fill up betwen 15 and 15.8 gallons and my mom is pretty consistently the same with her '99 Limited 4wd.
