How many people don't use the free oil changes and service?

Thanks. I didnt find that thread yet, but I did see some interesting ones comparing the Toyota 0W20 to Mobil 1 0W20.
The Toyota oul is pretty well regarded.
I looked around to see where I could buy it. A few hits on Ebay but it comes to about $7/qt with shipping.
Its hard to beat the Walmart price for those 5qt jugs of Mobil 1

Mobil1 will do just fine for everyday duties.

The funny thing about this thread is that when a customers 2yr/25k mile free services are done, most don't want to keep paying for the synthetic oil even though the interval stays the same. They'd rather cheapen out for the incorrect 5w-20 and 5k mile intervals.

However. We make them sign on the R.O. that theyre choosing the use the wrong type of oil for their vehicle.

I guess I am the other extreme. Im going to use full synth every 5 or 10k.
But I can see how people won't.
I was a mechanic in college and some guy brought in a Cadillac that I don't think ever changed his oil in 80k miles. Looked like the inside was caked in burnt molasses.

Unbelievable. Another reason to buy new, hard to believe using non-recommended oil even occurs to these people.

Your post is an example of what's called a lack of attention to detail, something that occasionally happens at ALL car dealerships. Did you purposely decide when you woke up that you would not use proper sentence composition by not capitalizing where it is required?

You sound like you work at a dealership, do you?

Yes I purposely decided not to use "proper" capitalization. I'm not sure there is any legal requirement to do so. I also wonder why this would bother anyone. Now we are at the point that lack of capitalization is going to be blamed for the downfall of society? Perhaps global warming?

Maybe the correct retort would be why you felt the need to worry about the capitalization when that has absolutely nothing to do with the topic being discussed. Was the lack of capitalization is the scourge of the earth website down and you somehow found yourself on this one?

When you have time, between analyzing a persons writing, grammar, and sentence structure, could you perhaps weigh in on some other earth shattering begging to be answered questions? Subjects like; which way should the roll of toilet paper dispense? Seat up or down? Why do you park on a driveway and drive on a parkway?

My god I wish I had the time on my hands you must

As far as the "attention to detail" direction or your post, sure it is an attention to detail thing, and dealerships are no more or less prone to it then anything or anywhere else. Should humans be involved there will always be attention to detail issues. Condemning dealerships for this is neither right nor just.

You are correct sir, there is no legal requirement to use the correct capitalization. But it certainly does say something about a person's professionalism and image. When you go for a job interview do you wear dirty cut off jeans and a T-shirt covered in horse manure? I would guess the answer would be no, because you'd want to profess an image of competence and capability. If you took a walk around a Toyota service area and every technician's work bay looked like Nagasaki at the end of 1945 with tools all over the floor and spilled liquids everywhere, would you want your vehicle serviced there? Why?

We are not at the point of a societal breakdown due to lack of proper punctuation. We are quickly approaching the collapse of America as we know due to the policies of the Left/Progressives/Socialists. We will not discuss that any further due to the strict "no politics" in threads rule here at T4R.Org.

I felt the need to worry about your punctuation because I wanted to teach/coach/mentor you on the subject. I retired from the military after 30 years of service. I was constantly assisting younger troops in all kinds of life skills. I think that if you use the correct sentence structure both in writing and verbally it promotes better communication and understanding. It most certainly DID have something to do with the thread as the original subject was oil changes at dealerships. You responded (with one post to your credit) about the matter but your objectivity and punctuation left me (and maybe others) wondering about your motives and professionalism.

Subjects like; which way should the roll of toilet paper dispense? Seat up or down? Why do you park on a driveway and drive on a parkway?

If you need me to answer those questions for you I will certainly help. The roll (or loose end) should always be oriented to the front. Rather than write out complex directions, the absolute best tutorial can be researched here: http://currentconfig.com/2005/02/22/essential-life-lesson-1-over-is-right-under-is-wrong/

The toilet seat should always be placed in the position that it is most often used. Example: If you live alone, and never entertain female company, go ahead and leave the seat up. If the house is filled with mainly women, leave it down.

The words “drive” and “park” existed long before automobiles. Remember, whenever you write or speak, you’re voting with your vocabulary. Languages evolve over time and a given term’s meaning is subject to dramatically change based on the whim of its users.

Back in the 1800s, for example, “parking” meant planting trees, flowers, and other bits of vegetation. A “parking place,” therefore, had nothing to do with stationary vehicles. Instead, it was a location specifically designed to encourage diverse, extensive plant growth for non-agricultural purposes.

Yet, many were soon commandeered for an entirely different objective. Historian Kirk Savagewrites, “By the turn of the century, such parking areas were sometimes used to hold horse-drawn carriages on special occasions...When automobiles started to overrun cities in the early twentieth century, parking areas were given over to car storage and the word began to refer to the cars themselves rather than the trees and grass they were replacing.”

During this transitional period, America’s parkways also began taking shape. Metropolitan reformers—who feared the health costs of industrial growth—started establishing wooded parks within cities nationwide, hoping their trees would make urban air more breathable. As automobiles rose in popularity, special car-friendly routes were carved through such parks. Unimaginatively, these were named “parkways”.

So parkways have nothing to do with the actual parking of vehicles. But what about “driveways”? Well, that particular word’s been around since at least 1884 and has essentially meant the same thing ever since—namely, a path that connects somebody’s private property to a public road. However, while lengthy driveways were once the norm (and, hence, enabled more driving), today’s average specimen is little more than a dinky personal parking station.

So using your logic if a surgeon makes mistakes and kills a couple of people a year we should not condemn them, because it's not right nor just? I mean, mistakes happen at hospitals. Maybe he lacked attention to detail on the few surgeries he conducted? Help me understand your thought process of why nobody at T4R.Org should tell the site members about their dealer experiences?

I'm not afraid to say it:
If someone cannot write correctly using proper sentence structure, punctuation and especially spelling then I will temper my response accordingly. Want to type and talk like a 3rd grader? I will treat you like a 3rd grader in my response and that means some questions cannot be answered because you won't understand the concepts.

With that said there is nobody perfect, especially me. I hated English in school. Do your best though because rightly or wrongly, I and most everyone else are judging you based on your post.

You cannot expect me to spend an hour helping you when you did not spend five extra minutes making sure your question was framed correctly and your writing as clear and concise as possible.

Boy,people are a lot crankier here than in the FJ Cruiser forum.
Is it something about the 4Runner?

This post must be edited to correct the missing space after the comma before I will consider the content.

:police:

As to the OP, fortunately I've not had dealership issues with oil changes. I have had issues with larger repairs. There were 2 done by different GM dealers involving interior panels. One was too cheap to replace a broken plastic clip and tried to use duct tape instead. They didn't even bother to tuck the "tail" of the tape up behind the panel. Another failed to secure the knee panel - it dropped onto my lower legs as I pulled out of the lot.

One Dodge dealer had our Sebring in to fix damage from a storm. Two door panels had a one inch gap at the top - I don't know how you miss a panel (let alone two) being that far out of alignment. And they tried to use touch up paint to fill in the dings and scratches rather than repaint as contracted to do. I know that tech lost his job, and I'm sure the manager took a lot of heat - by the end he was bending over backwards to make sure we were satisfied.

A Honda dealer, doing another storm repair, didn't bother to put down a welding blanket (replaced roof panel) and made a bunch of splatter burn marks all over the seats. Again, how do you miss that and give it back to the customer in that condition?

The one dealership that I trusted because thet actually did good work closed... it was in a small town and the owner had a few others in the city - it just wasn't profitable enough to keep open I guess.

So, to quit rambling and answer the question, I'll use the free oil changes until they run out or until this dealer gives me a reason to not trust them. After that, I'll do my own.

Man that is the truth. I'm a member of several FJ forums and I have to say they are always so laid back, love to help others without a smartass comment or attitude.
I'm not generalizing the members here at all. There's a huge group of great guys around here.

Im a member of the FJ62 forum on IH8MUD as well as the FJCruiser forum.
I dont recall a time where people flew off the handle for something minor.
Maybe its the age of the users?
My first day here I read people getting slammed for asking the "wrong" question.
But Im sure the majority here isn't like that.

Whew, some of made some great comments on this subject. AudiTech hit on some really good points. Attention to detail and doing the job right the first time sure did cost me money on some jobs, but at least I knew when the customer pulled out of the dealer he/she had no worries.

Can a technician drain the oil and change the oil properly? For 99.9% of them I say yes. However, so much more goes into it though. Did he/she perform all the required maint items that Toyota recommends for that mileage or what the customer paid for? Take some extra time and look the car over from bumper to bumper for any repairs that could be a safety concern for the customer etc. Several of my friends have new 5th Gen's and use the free maintenance. I started noticing they were not greasing the driveline like they should. Each of them brought it to the dealer's attention at the next service. Both of them were told that they do not have any fittings that need greased. This was at 2 different dealers. Sad, very sad.

I could go on and on but I think we all are getting the point.

Yeah, I'm not sure why either. I was on the 3rd gen forum when I owned one and somewhat of a more laid back tone there, too.

I have seen some really good advice on this forum and the few that get hung up on things completely unrelated to the topic I just ignore.

It's not an age thing, trust me. I am 52 and I love to help people out where I can. Personally unless somebodies grammar is just so bad I can't understand it, I couldn't care less. And if I can't understand it I just ignore it.

Life's too short to get hung up on something like a typo in a post. :-)

Not to derail this thread any further, but I couldn't agree more. It seems to be a handful of users here who spend an inordinate amount of time trolling the forum just waiting for an opportune time to post a self-righteous "there's 5 threads on this already, learn how to search noob!", "my post count is in the XXXX-digits" or "I know how to use 5 dollar words for 5 cent ideas, therefore I'm smarter than you". That said, most users here seem great, but the trolls really make T4R.org lose its luster. :frusty:

I agree after reading this forum for the last few months seems like it would be easier for some posters to just skip the threads instead of making a big deal out of them.

So quit complaining and start answering all these questions then. Take hours to research. Take calling friends in the business to give answers that you need to help some of the guys out. Step up! Quit whining and do something. There are two types here: A bunch of guys with questions and a few guys with answers. You need to be one with answers or STFU.

Hey brother. Sorry to burst your bubble, but you aren't the only one on here that knows a thing or two about vehicles.

You often have a very caustic attitude in your posts. Call it condescending or cocky - I don't care.

So my advice to you is if it is such an imposition on your delicate sensibilities and a waste of your critical thinking to help out people with advice, why don't you STFU?

Seriously - advice with a side of attitude is just not worth it. ;-)

Oh yeah, go get laid. You need to.

I wasn't always this way. You are right. I need to leave here and I will. Maybe when I get a 6th gen I will come back refreshed. Maybe not. It's up to you now. The guys I care about here have my cell and email.

I don't think anybody would want you to leave. I don't.

I am just saying we here all have a common love, the 4Runner. Some people know a lot, some people are learning and know little and many are somewhere in the middle.

My mother was a teacher and I was raised that it is a privilege to help others learn. Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, you feed him for life.

That's all. Consider the things you know about a gift to be shared - with joy. Not a burden. :-)
