How many regret lifting their T4R?

I just picked up the TRD Pro FJ suspension kit which upgrades my shocks and gives me 1" lift (leveling) in the front. I am on the fence with installing the kit and calling it good or going with 1"Toytec spacers up front and Dobinsons 1" lift springs in the rear which should result close to 2"/1" overall.

I read in another post about things you wish you never did and saw a few that wished they never did a lift. How many that did the mild lift I am considering would say they wish they never did it and how many are happy with the results?

I am running 275/70-17 Grabber ATx. on a 2015 Trail Premium.

Only looking for input on the mild lift, not 2-1/2" to 3"

Thanks, Ken

The only thing I regret is messing around with the Toytec TRD spacer lift kit. I should have gone with the Icon adjustable coil overs (which I bought next) from the start. I never planned on keeping it stock, so no, no regrets lifting.

Can't speak from experience since I'm lifted 3" front and 2.75" rear BUT I have actually considered removing my lift and going with just the TRD Pro kit for less lift, smaller tires, lower COG, better road trip handling, better alignment. If you do go with the kit you bought, just buy a 1" spacer for the back. No need for new springs, stock shocks are fine at 1" of lift also so no issues there.

Haven’t heard many complain about lifting or leveling the truck, mostly HOW they chose to lift it. Those that have flat out regretted lifting the truck (from what I’ve read) are from people who don’t off-road enough or tackle obstacles that require a lift in the first place, and then regret the lower fuel economy because they drive 99% on the highway. I hear A LOT of people complain or regret spacers over a true suspension lift (eg. coil over or spring lift). Some don’t mind the slight ride quality penalty that comes with a spacer lift (subjective to each person) to get the look they’re after.

I guess the key to any suspension choice is figuring out what you’re planning on doing with the vehicle and how much comfort enters into the equation.

I know I’ve learned the hard way and realized the the common saying “buy once, cry once” is very true. So I’m redoing my whole set-up in the coming month.

I do off-road. And I do often travel where my lift is necessary, so I don’t regret it in the least, even though I struggle to get my 15.5mpg average.

Good luck with your choice!

Lifted the 4runner with the Dobinsons springs. About 2" of lift in the front and 1" in the back. Don't regret it at all. Love the ride! It did seem more stiff when I went off road but that's the trade off.

I also have a 5th gen lifted 3", do you have any recommendations for a stearing stabilizer to calm the front end shimmy?

Only regret is not getting the King coilovers with adjusters sooner! Night and day differences on road and off road:thumb:

No regrets. Wheeler's Offroad springs with Billy 5100's, OME trim packer and JBA UCA's. Truck looks way better and IMHO rides better too.

honestly, I'm not sure. I haven't had the truck very long and I'm not the one who did the lift. id have to check. what is the significance?

If you are lifted your stated 3 inches and have stock UCAs therein lies your steering/shimmy issue most likely. Take a pic of your UCA and post it up and we can shoot you straight on what your working with and best steps to fix it. Also, take a pic of the front end suspension area so we can see if you are running the front end sway bar.

Thank you I'm east coast, I'll post tomorrow. Really appreciate the help

Have a Toytec BOSS kit (3" lift). Yes, there is a mileage hit (about 1.5 mpg - average about 16mpg for our driving). It is a little harder to get into. But there isn't a huge handling loss IMO. In fact, getting rid of the awful nose dive on braking was worth it alone!

We are going offroading on Labor Day so I'm looking forward to giving the suspension its first proper workout. The good looks were just a side-benefit!

But if you are just after looks and cannot stomach the MPG hit, then stay away.

No regrets...

I went with a spacer up front and taller spring in the rear (on a PRO) and now waiting till the 8112's hit the shelf for the 4R - I didn't plan to hit the trails as often as once week. IMO if you have a pro it should have left with the extra lift (2-3" over stock SR5).

If it was spacer or nothing I'd still take the spacer, the preload added a little more stiffness which I think it needed from the off.

No regrets, I generally spend a good deal of time trying to understand my options and take into serious consideration how I am going to use the truck. Making an informed decision for my application has yet to fail me.

I also very much agree with the buy once cry once motto, but that also doesn't mean you have to buy something more expensive just because you can. It's just gotta make sense.

3” OME here....and no regrets. It is stiffer than stock, but the cornering and nose dive issues are much improved. It also is able to handle my camping load out better. Ill be going to heavier springs next year as i add a front/rear bumpers and winch.

There are much better options for rock crawling and baha type trails than OME, but for a daily driven rig that sees serious off roading on occasion i thinkbit was a good choice. Im leaving tonight to travel the enchanted rockies trail from new mexico to near the colorado wyoming border. Nearly 800 miles of the trail are unpaved. None of my concerns for this trip involve the suspension. Fuel, on the other hand, is my number one concern.

Im averaging about 16mpg with 3” lift, 285/70/17 BF Goodrich K02 tires, roof top tent, and cfx50 dometic fridge.

I have no regrets lifting my 2011. Just bought my wife a new 2018 and when she got back home from the dealership she ask me if I have ordered her lift yet.
