How much did you pay for your 3rd gen?

Interesting thread. Bought my 98 limited in 2014 for $6,450 with 158k. It was second owner, lived in the PNW it's entire life, and very clean.

I've kept track of virtually every receipt I've spent on it and all in I am at $8,650. This includes timing belt/water pump/radiator/hoses/fluids, valve cover/intake manifold gaskets, plugs/wires/air filter, new head unit, new steering wheel, 99 center console, new windshield etc. etc.

Not too bad, don't regret one penny I've put into it.

01 limited Got 317,000 on it but the person that had it before it went into the impound took awesome care of it. Routine trans flushes, timing belt and water pump done twice (from what I could find), only thing it needed to go down the road was a new ds rear axle.

I bought mine in july for $1650
97 t4r sr5 4wd with 193k. Gotta do the water pump and timing belt this week. All I had to do so far was transmission solenoids.

$2500 for my 2000 SR5 4X4 with 139,000 Miles. However, it wasn’t running. It had blown a spark plug. I took a big chance, had it towed to my mechanic and spent $900 on new coil pacs, plugs wires and retread the head. Also did the fuel filter and tranny flush. She runs perfectly now.
The big bonus, she had the timing belt, shocks/struts, bushings and brakes done within the last year.

You sir, gambled and won!

The question should be how much you end up paying. I got my 97 SR5 w/230000 on it for $3000. There's more than that in aftermarket parts that got bolted on to get it to where I wanted it. lol

Well, considering they don't usuay.come tricked out with aftermarket parts, that's not an entirely fair perspective.

More accurately, and relevant IMO, is how much coin did you have to put into it to account for deferred maintenance to keep it road-worthy. This number is probably a direct, and inverse, correlation against the purchase price.

Experience dictates the less you pay, the more you need to sink into it to get it up to snuff. Unless you got ripped or got a sick deal.

In my case I got a great deal on a truck that needed nothing but the usual LBJ and rad. I added a bunch of stuff to make the vehicle suit my needs better. As it stands I could sell my rig for a pretty good profit to the right buyer.

In some other cases, people buy a rig and sink money into it because of rust, neglect from previous owners, or just plain bad luck with a motor or trans. What's the resale value of those? Not much more than they sold for.

Either way it's what you end up paying total. Not just the price of the initial vehicle, IMO. I plan on keeping this rig regardless of what my luck turns out to be in the future. It's nice to know that the money I put into has returned equity if I need to sell for some reason.

I agree with this statement, and I also look at the total cost of ownership as a factor of value. Aside from scheduled maintenance, to own a reliable vehicle, that I love to drive, which is free and clear of payments, and will go to 400K, is priceless.

My only regret is not buying a 4WD *kicks rocks*

2001 SR5 4x4. 177K on the clock. Pretty solid vehicle, as far as rust is concerned. I paid $2500, complete with a fraudulent Virginia safety inspection decal. I say fraudulent because the inspection report showed it passing 1 day before I purchased it. The brakes felt bad, so when I got it home to MD and pulled the "inspected" drum off, I found a blown wheel cylinder, a blown axle seal and the self adjuster mechanism completely and intentionally made inoperable.

I'll probably be somewhere around $1200 in repairs before it will pass a legitimate MD safety inspection.
