I picked up my 97 with 193k miles for 5k in really great condition. I could tell the truck was driven on 'salted roads' but only light surface rust, LBJ's and front shocks have been replaced, timing belt done at 156k. overall, it needs some new suspension bushings and rear springs (recalled springs were done in 2005).
My wife and I knew after having a 2wd 95... we needed the following which the 97 has...
4wd, roof rack, 3.4 (was thinking a conversion for the 95), tow hitch...
with the 95 totaled from the car accident, we got a check for $3400, bought the wrecked 95 back for $300 from insurance co, sold the 95 as is for $1000. so a total of 4100 from the 95... (still waiting for insurance to 'state' it's not my wife's fault and the other lady ran the light for a $300 deductible check)
bought the 97 for 5k, found 2015 taco take off's from CL for $650 (wheels and tires were shot on the 97) and fixed the door lock... so a total of $5650
all in all, I'm -$1550 (soon -$1250) extra into my 'needs'... bigger engine, 4wd, roof rack, tow hitch. and bonus running boards, bigger brakes (from factory)...
BTW, my wife and 10mo old were safe from the accident... the other lady ran a red, t-boned on rear pas door... mechanically untouched.
sucks either way, the 95 was a grandpa's car with 165k. Mint condition.

AND it was a s/c manual so i got that going for me hahaI got a lucky deal.

Super clean truck! Now drop the running boards, put some mud flaps up front to protect the paint, and you'll have a mean looking 4Runner. Can I ask what the scoop insert is painted with on it? I'm picking up a sport hood and I might need to repaint that part so I'm looking for my options.

Thanks! Ya I'll eventually ditch the running boards, but unsure if I'll go mud flaps or sliders with inserts. I believe the scoop is painted with flat black paint. The previous owner color matched a few items on the vehicle (rear spoiler, front skid, hood scoop insert) with flat black. Appears as if he took his time to sand it down and primer and paint it- I'm not gonna complain about it.

I paid $2900 for my 96' 5spd 4x4 w/ 134k, and I had to fly to Florida from Denver and drive it back. I couldnt find a manual with that mileage for that price in a million years around here so it was definitely worth it. I put about $1500 in general maintenance stuff before I drove it back (Timing belt, WP, belts, VC gaskets, plugs and wires, etc). So really $4400 all said and done. Extremely clean and happy though.

I paid 6500$ (CAD) for my 99 limited in 2014 (about 5100$ usd). I am the second owner, purchased it off of a 73 year old man. Accident free and only 221km's (137k miles)
