How much did you pay for your 3rd gen?

How are y'all getting 4Runners so cheap? one here in Dallas goes for $7-9000 and that is for one with 175,000+ miles.

The 3rd gen 4Runner market varies widely.

There are a lot of "beat up" 4Runners that I wouldn't even considering buying in the $2000-$4000 price range.

If you want sports, superchargers, or elockers you will be in the $6k+ range.

We bought a 1996 Toyota 4Runner for $200. Yes, two hundred. Even has a E-locker! Some douche nugget was drinking and driving, rolled it over, booked it on foot back to Canada (we live near the border in Maine) and left it abandoned.

It sat in our friends junk yard for two years. He sold it to us for $200 (He's a Jeep man and thinks Toyota's suck, hence the price). We towed it home, and of course it being a Toyota it started right up (HUGE mouse nest flew out of the exhaust and I laughed my butt off). We bought some awesome Super Swampers, lifted her up and now she races in the mud. 3 years later, 72 trophies later, and she's still running. In fact, we bought a replacement mud racer (1997 T4R) thinking this one might some day blow up- BUT SHE HASN'T. And our replacement just sits and waits. And yes, she starts right up too! (Also a rolled over T4R.)

Also, our Jeep man friend also races in the mud (races a Jeep) and he wasn't too pleased when our $200 Yota kicked his butt. LOL!

PLEASE HELP When i am driving around aprox 55-70 mph, my steering wheel shakes a little bit. The Toyota dealership said it was my tires, i got them rotated and balanced, didn't help, so i just got new tires(285/75/16 Duratracs) and i'm still having the issue. Can anyone help me with this?? much appreciated

I had this problem with my 35" mud tires on my 4th Gen. Spun balanced and everything, she still shook. Whipped out my hubby's old bubble balancer and it did the trick. No more shake. Maybe that's what you need?

So I think the moral of this story is if you're having engine troubles just roll it and it'll start right up ha

Pretty awesome you are profiting from it and eat the Toyota hater.

Be sure that whoever is doing the balancing used an adapter plate on their machine that is specific to Toyota/Lexus. I had this issue and had to travel to a shop further away to get this taken care of. Once I did, it was good to go.

$4,700 from PA. It has 147k miles on the clock, was a single owner vehicle, and was taken to dealer every single time it needed something done. It did have the "pink milkshake" issue but was service at the dealer with a new radiator and fluids for both radiator and transmission. The only major thing I need to do is replace the lower ball joints soon.

Bought my one-owner black 2002 Sport edition with 205k miles for $4800.

Some light rust, because it lived in Chicago for a while, but now on the road to recovery in AZ :wink2:

I just paid $3500 for a 98 5 speed 4WD SR5 with 200k in Alabama. No rust. It the previous owner put a cheap paint job on it and let the valve covers leak for years. Just did valve covers, plugs, Toytec Boss lift.

For real. I'm looking around western PA and northeast OH and everything is $5,000+ and over 175,000mi. And even then there's only around 8 to 10 on AutoTrader :twitch:

If I start looking further south there's literally hundreds of them with half as many miles for the same price :twitch::twitch::twitch:

I am looking at 4runners now though I won't be buying until end of Oct/beginning of Nov

currently own a 2014 VW Jetta TDi
with dieslegate and VW offering a buyback, details pending, I am going to use as opportunity to get out of VW and into a 4runner

Will be looking for a 3rd gen that I can pay cash for. I should pocket around $4k so I am hoping to find something decent for that price. Could probably go up to $5k if needed

I would be willing to drive 4-6 hours

but I check autotrader couple times a week, just to get idea of what is out there so when time comes I have feel of market

I got my 1997 SR5 4WD with the 5-speed two years ago for $4600 in southern California. It had 148k. Now it has about 195k. I've replaced all the belts, the rear axles seals, the brakes, tires, lower ball joints, tie rod ends, front sway bar links, plugs, plug wires, and suspension. She runs like a top.

Bought my 2000 Silver Sport for $8000 in 2011.
140k second owner.
Book of all records and impeccable maintenance.
Shopped for ALONG time. Didn't get the e locker / 5spd, but at the time couldn't pass up the deal.
Sold my 01' Tacoma that I had since day 1 with 190k+ for $9000. Was wanting to replace it with the double cab version but couldn't find anything under $14000 at the time.
So getting a really clean Runner with less miles and putting $1000 bucks in my pocket was too hard to pass up. Don't know if I'll ever go back to a truck now!!! Lol
Also went the cheap route in 2009.
Bought a decent 99' 4Runner for $4500. Drove for about 3 months. That's when I read about the "pink milkshake" and saw that it recently had a tow bill, new Radiator, and tranny service right before I purchased. I chickened out and sold it for the same $4500.
Plus didn't have kids yet and couldn't get myself to let go of my Tacoma.
Boy do kids change things!!!! Lol
Now after 5 years it's been passed back and forth between my wife and I. Lifted and locked, neutered back to stock, and been great all the way through, at 180k and ZERO issues.
Now it's back with me...........let the fun commence!

A couple of months ago I bought a 00 LTD 4x4 w/148K and elocker for $4k. Has 2" lift and suspension for new BFG KO2 265/75/16. 2nd owner chewed up the both bumpers but I was planning on aftermarket ones anyway. Had been looking for over 10 months and got lucky.
