How much did you pay for your 3rd gen?

This is super interesting to see what people have paid. I just did 9,250 , 184k miles. I really like it so far and hopefully it lasts a long time!
 
I bought my 1999 4x4 (no elocker) in 2016. At the time it had 47k miles on it. I paid $14k for it then. Body was a 9/10 with zero rust (CA) and interior was 9/10. As of Oct 2021 it has 78k on it!

My detail guy gets mad at me and always says, “why are you turning this cream puff into an overland vehicle?” LOL
 
Bought my '97 limited with 320,000kms or ~200,000 miles for $7000CAD in 2020 with a full stack of maintenance invoices and some basic mods.

Has anyone seen prices for a gen 3 (99-00’) in decent shape with a manual transmission. It’s almost laughable what people are asking for. I told one guy that he simply won’t swell the rig for his asking price. Offered him $3k less and he wouldn’t even consider it. Then that got me to thinking…are people just really that greedy in wanting to make a profit and have no real intention of selling unless they get a ridiculous amount for their vehicle [emoji848]

Hard to say without knowing specifics on what he was asking and the condition of the vehicle, but it's possible that he is aware of what the market is like right now, and knows that what he is asking is an amount that he can get. If that's the case, he's probably posting somewhere about some guy who came in and tried to low ball him by 3k.
 
If he can get $17k for his 4runner he probably would’ve gotten it 2 months ago when he posted it. Just sayin

Gonna need some more details on what he was selling besides just the price if you want any of us to side with you or sympathize. Go check out bringatrailer results on manual 3rd gens.

You want to see real insanity go shop 80 series TLC……..

Really love the 3rd gen…. But the prices commanded lately doesn’t work in my mind. The value just isn’t there. Eventually people will move on in the secondary market.

These are old vehicles that need some love and care. Really hate myself for passing up on an affordable LJ, JKU, and a 95’ TLC that could have been had for 4K, maybe less a 3 years ago. That opportunity is gone forever now.
 
Bought mine in January. Dude wanted $6900 and talked him down to $6200. 214k. Already had a lift, rack, mud tires that I happily sold and slapped some K02s on there instead.
 
1996 SR5 / 3.4l / 5-speed / Rear E-locker / 215k miles / stock. Everything worked except the 4x4 when i bought it for $6500 in summer 2020. Also had some predictable New England soft spots in the frame near the Rear Lower Links. Fixed the 4x4 for ~$150 (could've fixed it for almost free if the first mechanic diagnosed it right) and an great local welder reinforced the frame for $500 (would've cost less if he didn't have to dismount the gas tank). So I guess I spent a little more than $7k for a 5-speed with locker, which seems pretty good when I look around the market now.
 
I was oblivious to the 4Runner community because i grew up owning and building jeep cherokee XJ's. I owned my fair share of them.

Long story short about two years ago my aunt gave me her old daily driver for free and signed over the title. I was given a 1999 4Runner SR5, 5 speed manual 4WD. 275k miles and all of the maintenance records.

I primarily used it to commute to the fire academy which is when I fell in love with it. I have used the hell out of this 3rd gen forum to work through its variety of issues I've had.
 
2002 for sale...

What's a fair price on an 02 with 165k miles, new 3 inch lift with new tires ball joints, and cb axles? No rust on frame, it's leather which looks like its in good condition, exterior is really clean. 4x4. Not sure what else to post about it. I've got a 19 runner, but not sure much about the 3rd gen. Thank's in advanced.
 
1998 sr5

I got my 1998 SR5 V6 back in 2014 for $6500. She's still going strong . Gonna be taking the kids from East Coast to the Gateway Arch to visit relatives again this Xmas. She's made the trip 3 times since I've had her.
 
I'm in the market for a 3rd gen myself, but some of these prices I'm seeing on CL and eBay seem ridiculous. I don't care how damn clean the car is, I can't justify paying $13k for a car with 220k miles.

This question is for the regulars, or at least folks paying attention to the market. Do you guys think the prices are eventually going to come down, or is this the "best" we're going to get as these 3rd gens become more sought after?

Right now I'm holding until a reasonable number shows up for the T4R that I want, but want to avoid holding too long in case I'm looking at things the wrong way.

Nobody wants to hear my 3rd Gen horror story again, but I picked up my 2000 LTD E-Locker, bone-stock, original owner, for $3,000 about 2 years ago here in SF. However, I wanted to say my previous 'fun' car was a 1970 FIAT Sport Spider (saw your sig). I loved that car!!!!! The City ate it up, eventually, and I sold it to a flipper for a few hundred dollars. R.I.P little Ferrari.......

Personally, I don't think holding out for a T4R price drop of any real size is a reasonable strategy, sadly. Good luck and enjoy the F.I.A.T.

EDIT - Of course I meant F.I.A.T. in the Fabbrica Italiana Automobili di Torino sense, not something else ending in Tony, no matter how true that may be for some people!

I suggest buying one with some blemishes if price point it’s important. The days of cheap 3rd gens may be over for a good while.

Everything is crazy expensive right now. It’s not just old 4 runners.
