How much did you pay for your 3rd gen?

Was it in good shape? That's a crazy good price if so.
Interior is 9/10. Both rear bumper caps are dented, and paint is sunfaded from being in AZ for 20+ years with a few paint chips. Mast antenna is stuck in the up position (can hear the motor run when turning the truck on and off) speedo/ODO only work when they want to.

After my 2nd power antennae failed I replaced it with a fixed one from a Tacoma and never looked back.
For the price you paid you can afford a paint job and the speedo is probably a simple gear fix.
Around here a 5spd 4x4 would probably be at least $12K in good shape.

My 96 did the same at about that milage I got some 3-in-0ne Dry Lock Lube removed cluster rotated cluster while spaying into the numbers of ODO & trip meter pushing reset button for trip meter also. Might help might not.

My speedo still worked problem was ODO/trip meter numbers would stop counting up. Your case may be different.

forget the numbers for my 97 I had and sold later......current rig is my 1996 SR5 4x4 w/ rear e-locker that had a 3 inch lift already. 298k miles, paid a new Navy Recruit $3,500 but my buddy and I did need to invest about 2k into it to fix the rack n pinion and a few other small things that were leaking.

A really good friend bought a (2000) Land Cruiser. Sold me his 99 limited w/rear locker for $2k (230k mi). I fished with him for years and spent many hours riding/driving that truck. Coming up on 3 years and I've probably put $4k into it. Runs great. Very grateful.

Bought both of these 3-4 years ago...
- 2002 Sport Edition - 203,000 miles (currently 235,000) - 4wd - Excellent mechanical condition, no leaks, but needed a suspension overhaul and some cosmetic work - $6,000.
- 2002 Limited - 153,000 miles (currently 176,000) - 4wd - Excellent mechanical condition, also needed a suspension overhaul, fantastic cosmetic condition both in and out - $7,000.
I think the max I'd ever pay would be around $8,000 for a very well kept example. They just don't die.

I don't think I've ever answered this question. 9 years ago, I paid $5500 for my 2000 SR5 with 231k, a 3 inch lift, and a rear locker. Colorado vehicle as well so rust was non-existent. I've put my fair share of money into it, but I've gotten a lot of use out of it. Now I'm sitting at 346k, have a 2 inch lift, and there's rust, but I'll drive it til it dies, swap the motor out, and do it again. I did buy a 5th gen Trail last month, but the build quality of the 3rd gen is unbeatable, so it stays.
About 2 1/2 - 3 years ago, paid $4,000 for a 2000 Limited v6 4wd with 240K. EVERYONE I asked said that was too high. They thought I should pay $3,000 or $3,500 at most. In hindsight it was the best money I ever spent. It was not a project car, and nothing was or is wrong with it. Really happy with my decision. Still going to this day, survived a pink milkshake around 12,000 miles ago, still delivering mail with it during the week, trails on the weekend.
With my mods and preventative work done, I could, but would not, sell it for $7K today.

I sold my 92 AWD 5 speed to Joggle on here a few years ago for 1700 I think. It was in pretty good shape but had an oil consumption problem. Honestly out of the 4 Ive owned I believe they all did. I say if you can get your hands on a super clean one for 2k or less you didnt do too bad.
Knowing that you plan to build it, it a shame that you cant find one not running for dirt cheap though.
