A ballpark figure off the top of my head, I'd say I've spent in total somewhere around 36K on my '97 SR5, V6, 4wd, 5-speed, E-locker, factory leather, premium sound, moonroof, larger wheels, brakes, and tires, 4Runner.

I only paid around $15,000 for my truck new in 1999. It's a long story that I'll put in my build thread in a few days. Rebuilt motor, some body work & paint + mods.

This thread is making me feel less guilty about the $$ I spent...although a good portion of it was on maintenance stuff & new paint, weather stripping, window molding etc. just to freshen it up a bit

well when i was selling my 4runner, i went back to the records and looked through all of my receipts and invoices, i stopped after $20k, and i still have about a 1/3 of the stack left... but i know there are a lot of things i dont have receipts for as i bought them used and second hand. now we are counting in everything here(maintenance as well), so im sure some of that was my $2-3 clips and odds n in i bought at the dealer for interior trim, or moldings or yeah... -im OCD when it comes to my vehicles, -bolts and fasteners need to match and be OEM if possible. add in my $5k by in price im probably close to $30k. now that is what i have paid for things, not their value... things like my ARB snorkel, bumper, and lockers i have all gotten at substantial discounts(well under retail), my Warn winch i paid 1/4 what its retail is, and i had it rebuilt and customized/upgraded at Warn(not costing me a dime). -my wheels i got for free from SCS. and almost all of the labor has been done by me so im saving a ton on that as well. then there is all of my lighting, most of which is PIAA, and i always loo around to by used lights, that need a wire harness or to be reconditioned as i can typically pic up a $4-500 set of lights for under $100 -i think the most i have paid for a set is like $150.

its hard to believe that i have wrapped up $25-30k in a 20yo vehicle, and now am gonna start doing it all over again with a lexus -costs more, and will be harded cause i want it to remain looking as stock as possible. oh well i guess its what keeps us sane lol

At the end of the day you had an awesome rig that was probably extremely capable and nobody else had for under 30k. It was also built the way you needed it which you cant go into a dealer and just pick out.

There's a downside to doing things yourself. Once you realize you can build things you build things, and more things. These things your build cost money, and so do the tools you need to build things. Just ask me, I'm in the market for my 4th welder, tubing bender dies, dimple dies, press brake, and the list goes on. If my wife knew how much I spent I'd be in some deep shit!

Truth! I feel your pain, I have more invested in tools than in my truck, but I still love building things.

I've found that it pays to be on forums and get together with local 4x4's. That's probably how I got every good deal on parts etc. Also become friends with folks at the dealership parts counter and local shops:bounce:

Just this week I was making my own awning mounting brackets for my roof rack to save money, but ended up with a blown out regulator which cost $80 to replace. So suddenly... $80 brackets! Yay!

I was a Honda and GM tech for a number of years. My top box and the bazillion $$$$ worth of tools inside said box are up in Oregon (no room for them here ). Going to put some legitimate feelers out and see if I can find a place to start the chaos that is about take place.
