How much is it worth

Bought my 01 Limited 4wd in 2004-2005. Was a Toyota certified used car. Have all service records since new (dealer serviced until about 125K miles, I've done it since, keeping records).
Thundercloud with Oak interior, loaded (heated leather, 6CD changer, IPOD input added, tow package etc). Interior is pertty much perfect, exterior has a shallow dent in the tailgate (was there when I bought it) and a ding on the left rear fender flare, few rock pecks on the front.
Currently has 147Kish miles on it.
Has Michelin Cross Terrains with about 25K on them and an Optima Red Top.

This was the ex-wife's ride. Have only put about 15K on it in the three years since the D, and I just don't drive it. My girlfriend doesn't want an SUV, so I've been debating selling it (I have 4 other vehicles)

I have an aquaintance who is interested in it and I want to ask a fair price (not gouging, but I am dirt poor so don't want to give it away either).

I know this will depend on region, but can I get some ballpark figures of what ya'll are seeing?

Edmunds lists $8,294 trade in, $9,294 private, $11,025 retail.

I figured the dings knock some off, but I know when I shop maint records are a HUGE deal (deciding factor when I purchased this particular vehicle) as it shows me a vehicle has been babied.

Can I get some ballpark figures on what ya'll might expect this to bring?

When's the last time it had a timing belt/water pump? My guess is it'll fetch somewhere in the low 8's. But your market might differ a bit than mine.

Timing belt and water pump were done by dealer at 90K. ALL scheduled maint has been done, and I changed out transmission fluid more or less completely at 120K (pulled line going into transmission cooler and did a "flush" without actually doing a flush to get as much new fluid in there as possible).

I disagree with you on a few unneccesary comments you threw in, and since I'm in a pissy mood this morning, I'll throw in a few of my own.

My 4runner IS special.... if someone is looking for a late 3rd gen that has been taken care of. Find me another 11 year old 4wd 4runner that hasn't been off the pavement and has every maint receipt since new. Funny thing is, the only reason I asked the question on value was a WTB ad in a local Jeep forum where a guy posted a want ad for a late 3rd gen, 4wd, prefers silver, with around 150K on it. I hadn't really thought about selling the truck until I saw that ad.

I like how you assumed I'm "trying to make a quick buck or jack up the prices on the communtiy". I have 5 vehicles, the 4runner doesn't get driven, I'm not selling my Jeeps, I need the truck to haul stuff, and I commute in my gas sipping Accord. I saw a WTB ad and thought "Why not? Wonder what I should ask?"

Before posting this, I guessed my ride was worth low 8's at a min to around $9K max. Nobody pays retail, and I don't have unrealistic expectations that my ride is worth 20K.

As for "only a moron would pay over KBB value", I would say only a moron would use KBB to determine value......I see your KBB and raise you an Edmunds (Edmunds uses ACTUAL SALES IN A GIVEN AREA to calculate their values). KBB is a joke. Dealerships use Black Book, insurance companies use Edmunds. I came here wondering if I should go around private party or more towards trade-in value, and it looks like I'll go somewhere in the middle.

The two responses here have basically confirmed my guess as to what the truck is worth, although one response came with attitude like I'm imposing on YOUR board (you might wanna check newb..... I was here long before you were), while PitbullRescuer's response was intended to be helpful.

In the real world I rarely ever see any '01s in very good shape go for under $8000,I could still get $7000 for my '99 with 170k miles on it in part due to it's expensive service record and it's in exceptional shape and we have actual winters here.
My guess is your truck is in the $8-9000 price range but I'd offer it at $9500 and wait for the bites,they will come and then you can negotiate.

The price really factors in the area,condition,miles and having records of maintenance history and at close to 150k miles having already replaced shocks and coils and definetly a wp/tb change goes along ways.

My guess is you'll still unload it at over $8000 but maybe more since sometimes the right buyer comes along and knows what he wants. Good luck with the sale and let us know what you get for it. :thumb3:

For what little it is worth, my response is based on the endless what is it worth threads where people do not mention Edmunds or KBB and then expect a community of people who like 4Runners to fawn over and state some prices then they list them very high driving up the market price.

It sounds like you know what you are doing having already read Edmunds prices before starting this thread.

I also remember a thread of someone selling "holy grail of 4Runners" for unstated price while pm'm people a $10k price. So yes i am worn out on these type of threads.

No stock 4Runner is special unless the owner mod'd or made it special. Everything else is just one of many and should go base edmunds value, or KBB whatever you choose.

Sorry for the 1st jerk response but if it was really that special you wouldnt be selling it.

Also since you live in AR and not CA then it is worth less than even my original post. I will post screenshots of Edmunds based on AR zip code.

Edmunds and KKB aren't the final word on pricing,it's just a guide and not all 4Runners age equally so it's up to the buyer and seeing it in person and getting a very close up look really helps determine a buyer's offer. Now if your target market is kinds small for your area then that can hamper better offers but we don't have that shortage here in Colorado.

I have my '97 with 193K on it listed for $6000 FIRM on CL. I have no idea what KBB, Edmunds, etc say it's worth. I have it at $6K, I've had quite a few calls, two lookers and a 3rd coming to look at it this weekend.

Is it worth $6000? If someone pays me that for it is.

Bottom line, list it for what you want, it's your truck. It looks clean, the maintenance history helps a lot and they have a great reputation. I'd pay a premium for a clean, well maintained vehicle vs. the other ones in the market at market price.

I'm actually closer to Memphis and used that for my Edmunds quote. I also used "exceptional" as the condition. I think my 4runner is better than "clean" although it is not perfect. That's why I figure on getting trade in value or close to it instead of private party or retail.

Still, it's been babied, and I can document its whole life. I've gone 360K in an Accord and sold it to a guy in 2008 who is still driving it today. because I am totally OCD about preventive maint and I don't cut corners when it comes to making my vehicles last. I bought this 4runner knowing that if I took exceptional care of it it would last forever. To someone looking for a 3rd gen that should be worth something.

Time will tell though. If I can't get what I want for it, I won't sell it. It's paid for, doesn't cost me much to keep it, and I love the 3rd gens. I looked for 8 months before buying this one, because just like the guy in the WTB ad, I wanted a late 3rd gen, 4wd limited, silver, that had proof that it had been well maintained, because while a well maintained Honda or Yota will last forever, a neglected Honda or Yota might as well be a chrysler. I just saw the want ad and figured since I pretty much have exactly what the guy is looking for that I'd look into what a FAIR price would be, for him as a buyer and me as a seller.

If it was in or around DC, with receipts of the work done to it, anything under $9,000 and it is gone within the week. In Virginia Beach, no more than $8,000, unless willing to wait for the right buyer.

Being that the 4th generation 4runners have dropped in price since the beginning of the year, it forces down the price of the 3rds, with little given to the condition of the 4runner. But as good of condition as yours is in, someone will buy it. Look on CL and see what 4runners have been selling for in your area.

I say 7K is probably a pretty average price for that vehicle. It is a 2 owner vehicle, It looks clean enough, but small dings and scratches obviously make it not excellent. You can say its excellent all you want. But brand new cars are really the only thing that is excellent.

And I would say that the maintenance records have absolutely no correlation to how the vehicle was driven. I could floor it everywhere. Bounce the thing off the rev limiter all day and get it serviced at toyota because I want to. You cant prove you babied the truck. You can however prove its been maintained according to the recommend maintenance schedule. I would ask $8000, but expect around $7000.

You make a valid point. It would probably be worth more to someone who knows me personally than a stranger for that reason! I have buddies who are hard on thier stuff and there is no way I'd touch any of their used equipment for that reason, but I KNOW them. On that note anyone who doesn't personally know me has no real way of knowing how this has been driven.

I see lots of well taken care of 01/02 4Runners, its the 96-98's that get beat to crap. The 01-02 is more up marketed IMO, and thats why it is kept up better than earlier models. Most enthusiasts won't care as much about your extensive details on the car so much as the timing belt is at or a little past its half life and thats a $700 on the cheap side.

And then mine which sees plenty of snow and mag chloride every winter and enjoys puddle jumping off road,the dry climate is great for vehciles as they age and it helps that I hose down the underneath several times during the winter.

I drive and tinker on old Jeep CJ's, so I know rust is the #1 thing to stay away from. I wouldn't touch any ride with the rust you pictured. Your vehicle is VERY nice looking on the underside!

I quoted the interested party $8500. I had the car washed, waxed, and detailed yesterday (which is actually the FIRST time I've ever paid someone to do that; I've always done it myself, but I just don't have the time right now). I'm not sure if I'm way too high or way to low, but after I sent him all the maint records and pics (pics were of it before it was washed) with the price and he wants to look it over and drive it. If he passes I'll probably list it in the paper and on CL.

I have to admit, looking at it all cleaned up makes me want to keep it.

I'm probably going to be getting hitched here before long and the GF has a new Mazda 6. She says she doesn't want an SUV, and she will expect the garage to house her car instead of the 4runner, so that was what moved me in the direction of selling this in the first place. That said, I tried one last time yesterday after it was all cleaned up when I walked her around it and said "now you're SURE you don't want this" and she said she was sure.:sobbing:
