How much of a lift do I need for 33's?

So my 88 Runner is pretty much all stock but I went by 4x4 Warehouse today to talk about lifts and whatnot and they quoted my like $3500 for a lift, wheels and tires. Not bad if I want a pretty gnarly truck.. but I dont want a gnarly truck.. I just want enough of a lift to get 33's on it and have a little bit more clearance. So my question is.. with the AAL that I bought today, OME Springs and new shocks (either bilstein or rancho) front and back, and wheel spacers for the front and rear can I get 33x12.5x15s on my truck? Or at least 33x10.5x15?

What do you guys think?

You should be able to fit 33x10.5's without any lift and 33x12.5 as well, but the wider tires will probably rub. If you put a set of BJ spacers in the front, you should be good with the 12.5's as long as you go with a wheel with 3.75" of back spacing. I had 31's with my stock wheels and they rubbed the UCA with the lift. I think the back spacing on them is around 4.75".

Searching would give you the answer as well....

they probably will fit but you won't be happy with the way it looks. When you see another Toyota on the road your gonna wish you lifted it higher....
 
I did the Zuk mod with 14" 125# springs which gave me a 3.5" lift in rear, and with balljoint spacers up front there are no rubs or problems with 33x12.50x15 BFG AT tires. Before balljoint spacers they rubbed a little on the fenders, but a little bit of hammering and no more problem.
 
i did ball joint spacers in the front. and coils out of a late 90's jeep as a ZUK mod in the back. it was $65 in lift and i could fit my 33x12.5's with no problem. i did a 1 inch body lift and i can fit 35's with almost no rubbing except when i turn sharp on the trails.

I just put 33's on mine with no lift and I really like it! Obviously I'd like a lift but can't afford it right now. Until then these will do.:thumb3:
 
If you wheel anything other than a parking lot 33's are going to rub bad on a stock truck.
You'll need at least 3" of suspension lift. That's reality.
 
I disagree. 33s can be made to work very well with a stock truck with a little inner fender timing.

The only thing I did was remove the small fender that sits underneath the front bumper. It was broken in half anyway and looks better without it. I don't have any rub at all.
 
I have 33-12.50-16's on mine with no problem and no lift. I do plan on a light lift, but I am not in a hurry to do it now...

I have a ton of other things to spend the money and time on right now, so no lift for now. But it is not needed...
 
Has someone got some photos of how much needs to be cut from the guards? is it just the front that rubs? what about the back?
I'm planning on getting 2" of lift but in Australia everyone says you won't fit 33"s without 3-4" lift.
A lot of the american sites forums seem to think you can fit them with no lift.
I am happy to cut a bit out of the inside if my guards but I don't want to cut the whole wheel arch off!!!

Also, do you guys recommend ball joint spacers or new torsion bars in the front? What are the pro's and cons of each?
Do you need anything else to go with the ball joint spacers?

Also, is the offset I would want for 33x12.5s that same as a cruiser/patrol?

I'd much prefer to go the 12.5 route than the 33x10.5s.

Also, lift kit wise, do you recommend tough dog, efs, dobinson or ironman? They are the ones in the price range I want to spend. Or I could mix and match but i've heard thats probably not the best as you could end up with worse handling.

Bj spacers and new/ aftermarket/ any torsion bars do different things mate. Typically, aftermarket tbars are thicker (by mm's) than stock bars, therefore stronger but at the same time tighter. they, as will stock bars, allow you to crank up to 1.5"+- of lift, however, whether they are stock or aftermarket tbars your ride quality and wheel travel WILL SUFFER SEVERELY. Whereas bj spacers alter the geometry of the truck all together, most obviously the front. With bj spacers you put your tbars back to 0 (aka stock level), regaining ride comfort and wheel travel. We did my spacers FINALLY last weds, the truck.feels different and much smoother. Needs alignment/rotate/ balance baaaddd.

yes bj spacers! i did min last year to fit my 33's and it was a very good decision. dont go with the t bars.... thats no bueno

I'm assuming I will require a steering damper, does it matter which one?
Then I will cut my front guards to suit the 33x12.5 rubber on patrol offset rims (can u put 33s on 7" wide rims?)
Do you think this will work (mines a 2nd gen obviously).
Will I need to extend the rear brake lines?
Will this be the best solution for offload without going over the top?
