hey toolman. how much gas does the range say you have on a full tank? i hate having a v8 with a 20 gallon tank..i fill up ever 4 or 5 days and i cant get the range over 300miles per full tank..it sucks

Usually it says between 340 or 380 miles range. It depends what the MPG computer readout said before resetting. The first couple times I filled up I didn't realize the range feature resets itslef automatically when you tank up.
BTW it has close to 6000 miles on it now. I just go by what I usually get for mileage (15mpg actual/typical) and multiply by 23 gallons tank capacity. It comes out to 345 mile range. I don't use that feature to fill though. I use the fuel gage. I usually need to put 18-20 gallons in it each week.

The mileage readout in my BMW works perfectly, it's definitely not impossible to do. Now - on BMWs, there's a programmable feature to adjust the mpg readout. When I got the car, it was consistently off by 6-7%. I changed a compensation value in the on-board computer to match my gas receipts, and it's been right on ever since within 1-2%. This is a great feature, lets you account for changes in tire size, altitude, etc.
Perhaps there's something similar in the Toyota computer? Has anyone figured out user hacks for it?

I have 2003 V8 sport and calculated the gas mileage (4 consecutive times) when I filled gas. It averages around 19.2 miles. On the computer, it shows between 22 to 22.5. So, I guess the margin of error is around 13.6% in my case.
If we use K&N air filter, would that increase gas mileage?. When I asked Toyota service person and he said yes. Any thoughts??????.

2. I don't have 4WD.
3. No fast acceleration, no studden stop under normal driving.
4. Tire pressure on all wheels at 32PSI.
Normally I use cruise control on highways at around 65mph. Toybox, any suggestion on K&N air filter and improvement in gas mileage..........?.

I have 2wd as well and am currently getting 14.6 mpg. Your avg. is outstanding, I don't think you'll get any better than a slight tick up with a K&N filter. I have everything on my rig, TRD filter, Borla exhaust, TRD s/c, and my gas usage mostly depends on how I drive. Keep driving the way you drive and you should maitain the same mpg

I question if these things really do ANY improvement, perfomance or gas mileage. Gadget (A poster at Yotatech) has done some extensive research on different air filters and air induction type stuff and it was very informative. Ironically I saw a claim on one of his websites that states if you use Amsoil synthetic oil you will gain 1 to 2 mpg because of less friction and stuff. Amsoil also makes an air filter and from what I've heard and read they are much better than K & N. btw I've had K&N filters in the past and honestly did not notice a difference in anything. I would search the members here or at Yotatech and look up Gadget and go to his website...very informative.

I'm wondering if I'm just lucky as it seems that I'm the only one with a great mileage: I've been keeping track of the mileage (it's easy on a Palm) of my stock 2003 4Runner, 2WD, V8, since I bought it brand new in March 2003. Now it has 13100 miles and the average MPG over 13100 miles is 19.43 mpg, with a highest of 21.56 and a lowest of 16.78. These numbers are calculated numbers: # of miles driven divided by # of gallons filled.
I drive every day in stop-and-go Los Angeles traffic (average 20-25 mph) and I drive 50 miles round-trip a day. I don't baby it either. MPG neither dropped nor improved since it was new. By the way, the computer on mine always shown 3 mpg more.

Now you got me thinking so I ran out to the parking lot, opened the hood and yes, it said "4.7L V8" right on the top and I counted 8 ignition coils so it's a V8 and yes, it has the 'V8' emblem on the front grill too !

On a 120 mile drive from my house to Kingston NY (which I do quite frequently) I get about 21 mpg on the highway if I am not towing.
In routine city driving 12 miles a day daily commute I get 14.5 on the display. I have calculated it to be lower about 12.5-13 mpg.
These numbers are with 87 octane. I did notice a slight increase in mpg and a total elimination of the sulfur smell with 93 octane. But at $2.35 gallon I don't buy 93 anymore.
I love telling Camry drivers I get 12mpg!

The discrepency between the MPG readout, and actual MPG is no 'honest mistake' on Toyota's part, IMO. Has anyone noticed that not ONE single member reports an error the OTHER direction?? I.E., less MPG on the readout, rather than more?
Coincidence? No way! They know exactly what they're doing.
I've said it before, but we're the 1%ers here; the other 99% will simply believe the readout, report 'great MPG' to their friends & associates, and Toyota's MPG reputation is magically enhanced by 3 MPG.
Somebody here asked if the Toyota boys read forums like this; I doubt it, but if they did, they'd just laugh their little a$$es off, and say : well, at least we're scoring 99% of our BS MPG scam!
Don't get me wrong. I love my truck. It's an EXCELLENT piece of gear. But don't try to convince me this is an honest error; if they had any intention of making that computer accurate, they'd nail it to .00001% no problem.

Agreed! And if they had problems with accuracy at the beginning of a tankful, it should get MORE accurate as you drive further, and the tank becomes less full.
Ah well. I changed it to TEMp and don't look anymore. It was fun once though, resetting the MPG meter at the top of a long coaster and watching the MPG jump to 99mpg LOL

I called them, gave them vehicle information, mentioned this board and the fact that damn near EVERYONE who has a 03-04 4R has noticed this.
The explanation he gave was that the software program doesn't take into account for drag factors such as wind, air temp, rolling resistence, etc.
You might get what the computer is telling you MPG wise if you put it in a lab-like setting and eliminated as many factors as humanly possible - though that hardly seems a practical and reasonable solution.
Perhaps if the MPG software were written to maybe factor in the current speed vs expected "dragless" speed it may perhaps be more in line with reality.
I would be curious to know whether other Toyotas with similar systems produce equally flawed readings.
I still think it seems silly to have the vehicle give such information when it is inaccurate.
At least it does seem to be consistent - typically +2MPG of what you're actually getting.
