How much oil for V6?

2008 model, time for the first oil change.

I got a new Toyota OEM Oil Filter.
I got a new Gasket for the drain plug.
I got the Mobile 1 Synthetic (for Truck & SUV)

I just need to know much oil it takes?

Also, can you just just unscrew the oil filter by hand, or do you need the SST tool they show in the repair manual?

Manual states capacity at 5.5qts with a new filter. I find it takes about 5.75 to get mine to read correctly on the dipstick.

I have a big pair of channel lock pliers to loosen my filter when I can't get it by hand. A cap or strap oil-filter wrench would work too. Before you do that pull the rubber cap off of the catch tray and push a piece of hose onto it and then run the hose into a catch bottle. You may have to give that rubber cap a twist with a pair of small pliers. Good luck!

Wow, I am posting in the 4th gen. thread, I have had my 4th gen. for 5 whole days now. I changed my oil the day after I got it. My filter was on very tight, I used an adjustable oil wrench to help me get it off. I think I will be able to do it by hand since I don't put on the filters super tight. When you unscrew the filter you need to remove the rubber nipple underneath the metal cup that holds the filter. I put a 12 ounce plastic cup underneath. When the filter is unscrewed, oil will drain out and go in the hole, hopefully you can unscrew with one hand and hold the cup with the other.

My 2004 said 5.2 quarts, I put five quarts of Mobil 1 and checked it. It was a the full level and I checked again today, it is still full. My suggestion for your first oil change is to put in five quarts and check it on a level surface after a few minutes. You should have a fair idea of where you are and how much to add. After a few times of doing it, you should know pretty much how much your car needs and you don't have to guess.

Oh be sure to put the rubber nipple back on.

I just did an oil change on my runner a few weekends ago and I used about 5 1/2 quarts.

I would add 5 for now and let it settle...then measure again to see how much more is needed. Good luck

I have changed the oil in my 2004 every 5000 miles myself for the past 100,000 miles.

I find it takes exactly 5.5 quarts every time.

That's exactly what it's supposed to take. The columns in the owners manual are confusing for us. Litres are listed 1st then US quarts. It's 5.2L or 5.5qts. I'm using the slightly bigger -20004 Toyo filter maybe that's why I need a few ounces over 5.5.

Be careful in the Specification section. What you read was
1GR-FE engine
with a filter L (qt., Imp qt)
5.2L (5.5 qt., 4.6 Imp qt.)
Pg 391
This came out of my 04 manual.

It has gotten me before too.

I have been putting 5.5 in since day 1.

you can search ebay and get a case of the OEM V-8 filters ( The ones made in Thailand) for 39.95 w/ free shipping. You can hardly beat $4.00 a filter for OEM. Part # 90915-YZZD3. I have also been running those since early on.

I'm just going to use a cup when I remove the oil filter. I was going to take care of this today but I'm out of disposable gloves.

I got my Toyota OEM Oil Filter for $5.39 from the parts department at my local stealership. Not bad.
