How much play should an Auto Shifter have?

I've noticed that my Auto shifter handle has a bit of play in it when I brake or accelerate. Is that normal?

When I say play, I mean it moves forward a bit or back depending on what the motor is doing.

mine does it too, should be fine.

No, its should not have play. Most likely the shifter bushings at the base are shot and it's moving around. Mine does not budge at all.

Make sure to get ones from the dealer, two for 2wd, four for 4wd:

I could also be worn/broken transmission or engine mounts.

Shifter bushings would give you a 'loose' feeling both forward and back and side to side.

I don't think the OP is talking about a rattling shifter (which would be the bushings); he's talking about it slightly swaying while driving, going over bumps, potholes, etc.

I'm seeing varying opinions, reaching back to 2007.
Some say that is perfectly normal, drove off the lot that way, and some are saying its the tranny mount.

It's not really lose till the engine does does something or I brake so probably the transmission mounts.

Is there actually a write-up (with pics) on how to replace these bushings? I clicked on the link but all it showed was comments and the bushing part numbers....."inquiring minds want to know"....LOL
