how much should I pay?

hey guys, introduced my self in the noob section, now down to business

I am looking a purchasing a 2004 4runner sport 4x4 v-6. Original owner, with 69k miles, owner wants 17,900. With that said, what do you guys think is a fair price? Is there anything to look at 4runner specific when I inspect it? Any advice and all advice will be appreciated. Thanks,

I recently purchased my 2005 Sport 4x4 V6 with 72,000 miles for a little under 16k. One owner, all the service records, it's a clean truck.

Make sure you test drive it thoroughly in all modes (2wd, 4hi and 4lo). Sometimes the actuator for 4lo in the T-case locks up from sitting without use, and it's an expensive repair.

Listen for a "thump" sound when stopping. This usually indicates that the driveshafts need to be lubed up. If neglected, they should be removed from the vehicle, cleaned, properly re-greased, and re-installed.

Other than that, typical new vehicle stuff to inspect: tires, brakes, serpentine belt, fluids (check for leaks, pull the dipstick, etc.), check welds and seams for possible accident damage, etc.

Do 4x4s go up in price in the Winter in Fla? I'd say you can do better, probably $3k better, if you look around and spend some time. I paid $10k for my base-model '03 with 52k, but that was a crazy deal and I spent many months obsessing over it and had to paint it.

Try SearchTempest - The EASY way to search Craigslist, I found a lot of deals there, but I was willing to travel far and wide to get my deal. Free air travel comes in handy.

well everyone seems to say that I should pay way less then the guy is asking....I just checked kbb and excellent condition is 17,300 and the good condition is 16,500. Are you fellas paying kbb? Do these things really hold such high resale?

"Excellent Condition" KBB is kind of a joke for a used car unless it's really rare, or in high demand. I would say if it seems to be in excellent condition, paying "good" is probably the real average. If you can spot a few minor problems and make a fuss about them, you should be able to get it around "fair" KBB value. If there are any major problems, it should be under "fair" -- at least, that's my general experience.

It actually has only 64,000 miles come to find out. I got him down to 16,500 so I am going to go for it. That sounds fair to me......private party SE are hard to find. If you know of any in the southeast lemme know lol. I am not pulling the trigger until next weeknd.

It is clean. Never been off road. One owner, 65yr old man. He claims he washed it once a week and waxes it once every three months. New Michelins with less than 8k miles? I do think 16,500 is a fair price, I have been looking for a while. (the original 18k sounded too high)
