How Much? (Totalled)

Well I would think it is worth somewhere between Edmunds and KBB retail value.

The forum isn't really the place to ask because (as you pointed out) for insurance purposes it does not matter what you paid for your 4Runner THEREFORE it does not matter what we paid for our 4Runners.

Insurance will pay you using their own formula. You can accept it or fight it.

A single sample doesn't likely help much (otherwise they'd just give me whatever I found as the highest priced thing out there), but a whole bunch of applicable data points can help make a case for something better than the likely KBB/Edmunds. If you can find a truck like what I lost within 50% of the KBB/Edmunds price, post a link!

As for photos, they're on my wife's phone and I think it's probably best to wait until things are taken care of if for no other reason than to keep at least one card in my hand. Imagine a white 4Runner an its roof next to a mountain road...

Bought mine last year for 12k in Seattle. 99' Limited. Auto. 4WD. Leather. Locker. 86k. 1 owner. Clear car fax. Recent timing belt + radiator.
 
4runners are very area dependent for pricing, in my area I doubt that truck would sell for more than $5500. But I hear Denver, PNW, and SoCal have much more inflated prices.

I have a feeling they will give you $7k give or take $500.
 
I got the phone call the day before yesterday stating it was a total loss (no surprise there). I'm expecting a call sometime today with the valuation. This is the last chance to dance. If you or anyone you know has purchased ANY 4Runner in the last year, it will be a very useful data point for a fellow 4Runnerer. I appreciate those who have shared thus far, and thanks in advance for any further assistance.
 
I bought two 1998 SR5 4wd auto 4Runners within the last year. Both in good shape and approx. 150-155k miles. Both were about $5300 here in the Maryland/DC area. There were others out there as low as $3500 but they all sold before I could get to them. The first Runner I bought got totaled in an accident within 1 month of having it. Insurance paid out about $6500 (keep in mind they reimburse tax/title fees as well).

Keeping this thread on point. When my Runner was totaled last year, my insurance didn't use kbb, they used auto trader, cars.com, etc. as an indicator. They then offered the highest of the comparables. Once you get their offer, if it's not what you want find other listings for or above the price you're looking for and present it to the adjuster.
 
What he paid for it won't impact what he gets. As others have stated, he could've over or under paid for it. If he paid $30,000 for it, would they offer him $29,000 now? Come on guys.

Spectre, if you don't mind saying, which insurance company do you have? Different companies handle things differently. That could impact you here. If I had to guess, between what you're telling us the books say and what the market says, I'm betting you're going to wind up very close to what you paid for it minus your deductible.

Good luck. Glad to hear your wife wasn't hurt. Are you going to replace it with another 3rd Gen?
 
My 4Runner was totaled this past July from a tree limb falling on it. 2002 Limited 4X4 with every available option, clear title, no previous body work. I have insurance through Texas Farm Bureau. I don't know if it is the same with all insurance companies but they really tried to lowball me by saying they use J.D. Power & Associates to come up with a value. This was the first offer:

After turning their down their offer and contacting the adjuster I was told that they get their values by looking at AutoTrader ads around the area. I told him that I, just like every other American look to KBB.com and NADA.com for vehicle values. I went to Craigslist as well as AutoTrader myself and pulled a few examples and sent them in. Less than 3 hours later I had a new offer of $10,093.75. I've attached their Evaluation Summary to maybe give you an idea. Hope it helps!

You did pretty well! I was not quite as fortunate.

USAA uses a third party to handle their appraisals, CCC. They only honor prices from dealer vehicles (which makes finding 13 year old trucks difficult), and will take anything similar (which unfortunately includes every stripped down base model they could get their hands on). They don't concern themselves with options apparently, and only value them some token amount. To wit, a factory locker is a $23 option... I pushed back, played the game and got another grand or so for a final offer of just under $9K (I paid just a bit more than $9k) for a not loss to me aver approximately six months of ownership of right around $400.

Due to all the insurance claim activity going on on the east coast with the hurricane, my running through the system, and the third party company losing my comparables a few times, it has taken just a week shy of a month.

Replacement vehicle: 40-Series!

My friend just had an uninsured driver total his 2000 Durango. He had USAA insurance and had an awful payout experience. First they told him a Durango in the area was going for 5000 with more miles and it was a lesser model. Using that Durango they offered him 4000 for his. Finally he looks at the appraisal sheet and sees they had it down as 2wd and he tells them his Durango is 4wd so they add 98 dollars to the value. I think he ended getting them to 4500 and just took it. Anyway, if you have USAA and get anywhere close to reasonable take it.

I have USAA and while I have never needed a payout on my 4Runner, I was told that will pay for upgrades and accessories as long as you have receipts or estimates with pictures for up to $10,000 in add-ons.
