How Often do you off-road per year

I said 20, but it's not "all day" most of the time. A couple times a month my buddy and I will go out for a few hours after work and explore trails and go shooting. There's a lot of random trails that meander through the hills and sagebrush around here. Most are not maintained so you really only need 4wd to make it through washed out gullies or some of the rock patches. My truck is stock suspension and tire-wise, so these trails are pretty mild when it's dry, but not so much when it's wet.

This is what I am talking about in my last post. You can at times drive for miles very easy and then run into spots like these.

I think the poll is correct, most are using the vehicles for normal dirt off roading.

myself I do limited off roading to get to certain fishing spots but its nowhere 1-2 hours to said spot.

most of the time its for the winter aspect since I drive in snow conditions before the city/highway plows the roads.

This would be an interesting poll to release to the Gen I, II, and IIIs. I imagine those runners would be offroading much more frequently. The older it is . . . the less you care about wrecking it. LOL

Living here in Phoenix, there's a bunch of badass trails within an hour's drive. It's relatively cheap fun and the fiancé is starting to get into it too. Plus, the trails around here are desolate enough that I can take some of my guns out and target shoot without disturbing anyone.

Our trails are rocky out here so we don't see much mud.....which kinda sucks.

Even though I'm a 4th Gen I said 30. I lived in Vegas for 8 years up until I moved to Utah last year. In Vegas I did a lot of long distance shooting (1100 -1200 yards, and 1 mile only a handful of times with some retired PJ's). Every weekend and sometimes during the week I would just park the work car and hop in the Runner for some desert action. There was no better stress reliever than to drive 20 miles into the desert, set up the shooting mat and just look downrange with zero noise other than the wind. Tons of great trails from easy to sketchy and miles upon miles of flat with rolling alleyoops. Here in Utah I've only been to Moab once and it was pretty awesome.

Hi neighbor - I'm just forty miles down the road in Fernley. After you get some LT - C or E rated tires on it you'll have to come and join me someday. I've been exploring ghost towns, mining sites and remote mountains and canyons in northern Nevada for several decades now . . .

I'll gladly take you up on that. Right now I'm waiting about another month for stock tires to be fully worn so I can try and get some credit from Bridgestone (I'm at 25k and they claim a warranty until 60k). In the meantime I have my rear shocks, springs, UCA's & sliders all sitting in my spare bedroom and I've been waiting 6 weeks for Fox to make the coilovers...

My 4Runner isn't my daily driver, but I have it because I use it for what it's best at: being a tough SUV. I drive 100's of miles in snowstorms, pull logging timber out of my woods, camp in the back of it, explore remote trails and places far away from towns and people, transport large items. It gets used for what it's good at.

If I was just going to be driving on asphalt regularly and didn't need/want to do all this other stuff I would have just bought a Highlander or something.

Yup. But just on this site. Your base suspicion is correct, the vast majority of late model 4Runners don't get used like they should and most never leave pavement at all.

I'm actually quite surprised this poll hasn't been done before. It got me thinking really hard about how many times i've been in 4wd for longer than 15 minutes. I started counting, and had to remove shoes than borrow my sons fingers and toes..


.... Heck just a week ago I spent 7 days all off road in 4wd. It never left 4Hi from Sunday night till Saturday evening. =)

My 4r has only been in the garage, a couple of road trips on the highway, and play grocery getter and that is basically it.

I would love to off-road, but lacking a place here in Miami. Out west there are tons of places to go for the day or half day, just out to explore, but not here.

So it is not from the lack of desire, but the lack of availability. When i lived in Washington state years ago, I was out off-roading often.
