How thin were your old brake pads

My brake pads have slightly less than 1/4" of pad left on them after 66k miles. I was wondering how thin you let them get before replacing them.

I think they measure them in millimeters. Ill look at one of my service records later, they have a chart that says replace/good etc.

Changed mine for the first time at around 85K miles. I downshift a lot when braking from high speeds to help preserve brake life. Contrast that with my wife's SUV...by 80K miles, I had changed her brake pads 4 times. She does the whole wait-til-last-second-to-apply-brakes thing.

I replaced mine at 38k... That whole seized front caliper thing really killed me. They were worn down to the bare steel. I replaced my calipers with Duralasts from Autozone and some Wagner ThermoQuiet ceramic pads. I LOVE the braking force I have now!

But yea, I was down to bare steel at 38k lol.

I personally reccomend 3-4mm of material minimum. I change all my brakes at about that measurement and it tends to work out well.

Pads are a lot cheaper than replacing a motor or transmission. Do yourself a favor and use the big pedal. Your driveline will thank you.

Depends....I check my brakes in the middle of the summer. If I don't think they'll go another year I'll replace them then. I might be able to get another 5 months out of them....but I don't want to be changing brakes in -10 degree weather.

Like Blackworks said and I think the Toyota spec says < 4mm = change your pads.

Hi, mine lasted a full 70,000 miles. My garage recommended that I change them during my service...

I recommend the brake pads to be replaced when they reach their service limit of about 0.1 inch.

05 GX470; 5 mm @ 92,000 miles/9 years of age. Could have gone longer, but I was pulling it in for other services and just took care of it instead of keeping an active watch.

A good rule of thumb is when the lining is thinner than the metal backing, it's time to change them.

I am legitimately trying to remember if I've ever worn out a set of pads through normal use. I think all mine have been replaced along with a seized caliper.

Pad on the right was from a seized caliper. The rest looked like the left side. Only drove it like one day to look like that [emoji28]
