That's what the SR5 version looks like.

I am happy with the results and am sure that either would look better than what I had!

14 trailer owner I can confirm this is the trail version with the darker silver.

How'd you change out the shifter piece?

Grasp the handle firmly and twist counterclockwise. It will thread right off of the lever/shaft.

A HUGE thank you for this detailed write up. I read the tech repair manual and was confused about how to replace this piece. This is an excellent write up.

Long story short, my 14TEP was broken into a couple months back. I finally repaired the dash this morning and used this write up to replace the "garish" trim. I also have the original 2014 (very very slightly blemished) piece if someone is looking to upgrade an older 5th gen 4runner. If so check the classified later tonight when I post it.

Hi Dingo,

"EXCELLENT JOB"!: Back in April or May of 2014, I was making some changes to my truck's stock audio system. There are a pair of relays (for speaker selection) in the passenger side kick panel through which your vehicle's sound system speakers are turned on or off; via 'Party mode' button. I needed to disable these relays to allow function of all 8 speakers even when the 'party mode' was in use.

FAST FWD: I searched You Tube and this forum's vast Knowledge Base library and still could not come up with anything even close to getting at those relays. As a result I ended up leaving the speaker selection relays in the 'default' position (all speakers on) and re-routing the party mode circuit to By-pass those relays altogether which accomplished the very same thing.

I'm sure there are others here who have wondered what was preventing the glove-box from coming down but were cautious of tampering with the vehicle's 'Air bag/restraint system'...

Hi, How I wished this covered a 2017 4 runner. Can anyone help with locating the TPSM module in my 2017? and how to get at it.

STEP 2:
Remove the plastic trim pictured below. This also just pops off.



STEP 3:
Pull the climate control assembly forward. It is held on by clips and a firm tug forward will get it loose. You don't have to remove the assembly completely for this mod. Also note that I removed the climate control knobs, but this is not necessary.



STEP 4:
Remove the small rectangular trim pictured below. This is the area in the bottom left corner of the glove box. It pops right off. Beneath it are two bolts. These bolts secure the knee airbag. Sorry for the crappy pic. I forgot to photograph this step. The bolt location is somewhat visible in the next step.



STEP 5:
Drop the airbag assembly and remove the two lower bots for the glove box assembly. The airbag assembly is held on by three bolts and a few plastic clips. Two of the bolts were removed in the last step. The third bolt (furthest away from driver's side) can stay in and the airbag assembly will pivot down on it and out of the way. You don't have to remove it completely for this mod but you can if you want to. You will have to remove the passenger's side kick plate to gain access to the third bolt if you want to remove it completely. The two lower bolts for the glove box assembly will become visible and easily accessible once the airbag is out of the way.

It does not just drop....

When you had the glove box out, did you notice whether it was easy or doable to just replace the front door? How is it held in place with overall box unit that you have removed, for example?

Old thread but just wanted to say thank you to the OP. Used this write up to drop the glove box while chasing a rattle in that area. It ended up being the 4WD ECU bracket above the glove box that has somehow gotten loose. To my surprise, I managed to not break any plastic clips in the process!

Glove Box Removal 2022 4Runner limited

A big thank you to the OP for this thread. It made tearing into my new4Runner less stressful. Added dual USB ports and a 12V cigarette power supply to my glove box as those spaces were empty in this trim. This writeup made it simple. The only thing I did differently was to remove all three bolts from the airbag below the glove box. This made it easier to pull it straight off and drop a few short inches onto an empty 6" tall box to hold it in place. Once again, Thank You for taking the time to write this up.
