How to change o2 sensor

Sorry I'm bringing one back from the dead here. I'll need all your juju for this one...

Started throwing P0420 code for the O2 sensors. After just clearing the code a few times I decided it was time to replace them. Ordered parts and crawled under to find this.

Looks like someone tried this before...

Bolt extractor on the way from amazon. I'll try a wire wheel to clean them up and see if there is any nut left to grab (the left looks completely rounded off). PB blaster, chisels and propane torch for heat will be ready as well.

I'd be ready for the stud to come out with the nut on that.

You can look up South Main Auto's video on Youtube and take a look on the o2 sensor replacement on the 3rd gen 4runner they did years ago. He torched off the bolts/gaskets and successfully replaced the downstream sensor. The torch will be your best friend for this job.

Have replacement studs on hand just incase.

Clamp it hard with vice grips with the sharpest teeth and move it back and fourth and see if it budges.

If it’s throwing the P0420 code it’s most likely a bad catalytic converter unfortunately. Might want to look into doing the ohm resistor mod instead of dealing with those studs.

Also if your vehicle is registered somewhere with no emissions I would just let it be. That code doesn’t affect the way it runs. My moms 2002 Camry had the check engine light on for a p0420 code for over 10 years and never did anything about it and it ran great. Till I got it and had to put a cheater on it to pass emissions.

That is the rear.

wow, I was sure that for the rear my 2000 and 2001 had the big one without the 2 bolts... I even had to buy the big socket thing to do my 2000

I thought from reading online it could be either the cat or the O2s and figured I’d try the $100 fix instead of an exhaust shop.

I’ll have to look into the mod.

Fortunately it’s not my DD.

My stud were completely rusted, $100 at the local muffler shop and they replaced the tailpipe section, welded in a replacement sensor bracket, and installed the new sensor (I had already bought the sensor). Sharing in case someone run into major issues removing the bolts

Wait... you mean a proper shop did all of that for $100? That's less than the price of the sensor.

I know the part is almost $200! I think i would have to replace both at the same time. So with that said i've already spent $400 and the truck aint even on the lift yet!

uhh the sensors should cost $100 at absolute most... Usually can be had for $50. Might wanna reevaluate where you're buying them from

I went to the Dealer.. I've had crappy luck with Autozone and Pep Boys so i naturally get my OEM parts from the Toyota Dealer.
I just thought everybody did it that way. Do you replace both at the same time?

Oh yeah that'll do it then, dealerships are always unreasonably expensive. You CAN replace both, I certainly did, but I don't think you HAVE to do them both. Just one of those things thats recommended since you're gonna be down there anyways

That's what i was thinking.. It prob wouldn't hurt. It's going in for a decent amount of work that i simply cannot do. but changing the sensors i should be able to handle myself.

Denso is the OEM manufacturer for air/fuel and oxygen sensors so it's a lot cheaper to buy the correct denso part number from a reputable parts source (not amazon or ebay). Denso part finder: Find My Part

The problem with Denso's FindMyPart is it, well, doesnt find your part. It will list every O2/AF sensor used and/or compatible with our vehicle, but it won't tell you what yours came with, and it really varied between years/trim/emissions. I highly recommend you double and triple check the part numbers with other websites before purchasing, I ended up having to order several until I received the right ones initally because of FindMyPart. Hell one of the ones Denso told me would fit didn't even have the right plug. It was a year ago but if I recall correctly measuring how long they are really helped find the right ones
