How To Disable Flashing Lights When Unlocking?

I just bought a new 2005 4Runner Sport Edition. I am enjoying it very much.

One thing however that I do not like is that when I use the remote to unlock the doors, it flashes the parking lights.

I am an amateur astronomer and it will be very annoying if I am out a star party in a dark location and the lights flash every time I need to get something out of the car. My fellow observers won't appreciate the lights at all.

The manual says that the lights can be disabled, but does not tell how. Does anyone here know how to do it?

Thanks,

most likely the dealership will have to do it. i know on aftermarket alarm systems its a relay that tells the lights to flash, so im sure its the same principle for the factory alarms. so it would be a matter of finding the right one. i suppose you could somehow find your wires for the flashers, and follow them back to see where they go to. or maybe theres a way to disable them just by pushing some buttons on the remote im not sure.

mborman, congratulations on your new purchase.

With respect to the flashing parking lights, there are some things that you can do by yourself (with instructions in the manual) and others that require someone at the dealership to use one of their "hand-held testers."

For example, you can do a strange dance with the ignition key and opening and closing doors and that sort of thing to change the automatic door locking all by yourself. You can't disable the door locking entirely, though.

Things like programming the ECU to recognize a new key or fob require the hand-held testers that the dealers have.

If your manual says you can disable the flashing lights but doesn't tell you how to do so, you probably need to have the dealer do it. You may be able to get them to do it without charge, since it's only about a 5 minute operation. I'd check the manual thoroughly first, and then check with the dealership.

Thanks for responding to my question.

I am hoping that it is a programmed feature that I can change with the remote. I was hoping someone here had already come up with a solution. I will call the dealer tomorrow to see if they know.

Thanks,

You could always unlock it with your key, that would eliminate the beeps and the lights. It defeats the purpose of having the keyless entry, but that's an option if you don't mind the lights and the beeps otherwise.

Since it is new, take it back to the dealer and ask them to do it for you. Since its new, they shouldn't charge. If you wait too long, they may not be so kind...

If you take it back to the dealer where you bought it and they are changing the setting from the factory default to another setting it will most likely be free. If you take it to a dealer that you did not buy it from or you are asking the dealer where you purchased it to program it back to factory default because you did not like the change made previously, chances are you will pay for the programming.
