Thought I'd share a quick rundown of how I installed fender extensions and mudflaps to stop everything flying all over the place with my running boards removed... Mostly sand - it flew everywhere without these additions.
Used rubber extensions from my local rubber shop - these are specifically made for fender extensions, you can get larger ones but they were very expensive. The flaps are just sheet rubber cut to size - I'm going to add stainless strips on the base of each at some stage.
These just pop rivet onto the inner fenders.
I used small angle brackets for the rear mudflaps - in the front everything just pop riveted on easily, but in the rear I had to use brackets to attach to the small factory mudflaps. Mostly used aluminium and stainless, but these steel brackets were all I could find...
The secret weapon - sticks the fender extensions in place so the drilling/riveting is a one man job. Just used tiny drops.
Cleaned everything up with this before attaching. Used aluminium pop rivets.
Some fine New Zealand beer of course, and a trusy assistant...
The fender extensions were super easy - cut them a bit long, line up one end nicely, glue in place, then drill and rivet. After that I trimmed them up to look tidy.
I just used a rivet for spacing, I'm painting them black anyway.
The front mudflaps were aligned and riveted in place easily too - there were plenty of flat places to drill into. No cutting, just used the pieces I had precut. I glued the flaps to the extensions to create a seamless flow - I made sure the flaps stuck out to the same width as the extensions.
The rear flaps had to come up much higher to meet up with the fender extensions, and I needed to use brackets to attach them to the existing flaps. These were riveted in place.
Test fitting the flaps - the two stainless bolts with the washers are fitted into existing bolt holes - I removed the factory bolts and replaced them. Very useful for lining things up - I just marked the holes in the rubber, punched them with a slightly larger hole punch, and adjusted then tightened to hold in place. The protruding lower bolts are drilled through the bottom of the existing small mudflaps. I trimmed the inside corners to suit once they were bolted and riveted.
From the rear:
I used nuts/washers to space out the gap between the existing mudflap and the new rubber flaps:
Top of rear flap riveted to the first bracket, holes drilled for next brackets:
Completed - two views from rear:
Side:
Went on a surf mission and they worked brilliantly:
Cleaning the salt off afterwards:
All told I spent around $100NZD and 3-4 hours. Well worth the time, hope this is helpful to someone! I previously had sand or mud all over the surf(4runner) every time I went offroad, now it is very well confined.
Feel free to ask me any questions if you have em!
