You need the either buy a marlin/inchworm tacobox. or set your own up either way its going to run about $1200 MINIMUM for parts. Then you need to add another cross member and buy a mount $100

the driveshaft work. Front has to get longer and the rear needs to be shortened

ANd on 4runners the gas tank is in the way for install, so you either need a f150 tank behind the axle or drop the gas tank and cut the rear stock crossmember off to get that bad boy in there

or buy/build a lefty that has a 4.7 low. Then avoid the driveshaft/ gas tank/xmember BS but you will pay for it. a built lefty with 4.7's is going to be close to $2500

If money is no bigge the go for it, but unless you wheeling REALLY hard stuff with 35's or something this really is unneeded

yeup, and you may as well SAS it first, cause with such low gearing your gonna be snapping CVs left and right, youll pass up Glen in the busted CV dept. in a week.

One cool thing is, if you have a manual trans it is shorter than an auto and will not interfere with the gas tank.

Before you jump on the lefty 4.7, you will loose the stock 2.28 low. This may not sound like a bad thing but you may find yourself needing to stop and switch from low to Hi and back alot.

Im speaking from my experience measuring and I have a 5spd. It would fit once its in, but there is no way to install it with the tank in. I dont think the 5 speeds are shorter than the autos either. i have never heard of this.

I didn't think about the space needed for the install.
I measured mine (5 speed) once and it looked like I would have about an inch between the rear case and my tank (skid included).
I also measured my friend's 01 auto and it was about 1.5" longer. Maybe it's the 01 transfer case.

I may be wrong.

I don't think dropping the tank and hacking that crossmember would be a big deal if you got a Taco box. I'd do it If I could get my hands on one for cheap, problem is they aren't cheap.

Yeah the tank issue really isnt that big of a deal, And even if you got one for under a grand you will need to get new balanced drive shafts, and in sure thats going to be expensive

Reviving this thread rather than starting a new one.

I'm curious to know what would be involved in using this in a 4runner:

TACOMA DUAL CASE ADAPTER KIT | CBI Offroad Fab

I've heard that the stock crossmember can be kept. The obvious addition would be a earlier model year gear-driven transfer case, but those can be had for cheap.
Obviously, tacomas are much longer than 4runners and there is a ton more room under there.

Is this a cheap way of getting a dual case setup into a 3rd gen 4runner? Or am I missing something?

I'm in the middle of using this kit on my 5-speed 3rd gen.

Other than the top shift old RF1A case you will need a 23-spline input gear to replace the 21-spline they had (unless it was from a old turbo truck).

https://www.marlincrawler.com/transfer-case/parts-upgrade/total-spline-input-gear

that's assuming you want to stick with 2.28:1 low range in the crawl box.
If you want 4.7:1 low range which is what most are doing you'll need to purchase a whole set of gears.

https://www.marlincrawler.com/transfer-case/line-ups/single/4701-xd-gear-kit

then you just need to have the driveshafts resized and to make or buy a second crossmember.

Some additional parts I bought to finish it off are:

This crossmember:
Tacoma T-Case Crossmember - Front Range Off-Road Fabrication

To keep all the shift levers in the same spot without cutting up the floor I bought these triple sticks:
Triple Sticks

And to keep my stock transmission shifter from hitting the t-case shifters:
https://www.marlincrawler.com/transmission/shifter-parts/short-throw-shifter-kit-r150f-34-liter

you could just get the 23-spline input, keep the 2.28:1 low range, cut the shifter up through the center console, and build your own crossmember.

The stock transmission crossmember/mount will stay but you are strongly advised to add an additional crossmember to deal with the extra weight hanging from it and the greatly increased amount of torque that it will now have to deal with after all that gear reduction.

Some of the above mentioned changes were important to me and I just figured I'd share why.

I'm waiting on the 4.7:1 gears from Marlin (expecting the first week of May) then it will all be going together.

Awesome informative post EatonKyleH.

I already have a short shifter from the previous owner and I think that a 2.28 would be enough reduction for me. Driveshaft modification seems dead easy to me: cut shafts, machine inserts on my lathe that will serve to increase the length (depending on which shaft of course) and line up the two halves perfectly. Weld the inserts in and have the shafts rebalanced.

I plan for this to be my next major mod, now that I'm lifted, locked, fully armored, and have a winch, snorkel and appropriate recovery gear/tools.

I keep finding myself doing more and more rock crawling and my lack of gear reduction is limiting me more than my ifs. Especially with my driving style. I like to carefully choose my line and go nice and slow. My current 5 speed and 4.10's with 285's is awesome on the highway. I wouldn't want any lower gearing for on-road driving to be honest. Offroad on the other hand, I constantly find myself needing to ride the cluch and driving obstacles in a much less controlled manner than I'd be able to with lower gearing.

Damnit I want duals so bad... #eventually

Same here. I've purchased a winch, snorkel, wheels, tires, full skids, lights and a hilift in the past 3 months so I'm done for a while...

Now going into 16 months of back to back university semesters so duals will have to wait until Fall 2016 for me.

That being said, if I could find a 21-spline top shift case for cheap, it looks like I could do a basic dual setup for under $1000.

Did the triple sticks fit your stock 4runner case?

I'm doing this right now. I used the TG dual case adapter and did the twin stick mod to the stock case. I'll have about $1600 into it when all said and done. I did some rock crawling with it and couldn't stand the lack of reduction that I'm use to in my crawler.

Has this been done and kept the multi mode in an 01. I am in the planning stages of my build and miss the dual case setup from my 81 p-up. I really want to do this but I don't want any lights on in my dash.
