How to fit 285's?

I have a 99 4runner sr5. It doesn't have fender flares just the metal edging. Looks like theres plenty of room under there for bigger tires, currently have 265/75/16's on it. I REALLY want a bigger tire but don't want to drop $2,000 on a lift and install and I've never really had clearance issues to be honest with you. Does anyone know the minimum amount of modifications I can do to fit some 285's on there? It's my understanding the current tires I have (265/75/16) are the biggest tire I can fit on it stock.

Yes they'll fit. Yes they'll rub. You'll have to do a bit of trimming and pounding on the inner fenders.

I read that sticky and searched. Nothing about the minimum amount of mods to fit bigger tires, just an overview of lift options. There's got to be some way to fit a little bit bigger tire on there they look puny on it!

:edit: just to provide a little more useful information, I would read the article about fitting 315/75/16's without a body lift and use the same techniques to measure and clearance for your 33's.

OK now the more browsing I'm doing I'm seeing that people hate answering questions that have already been answered. So yeah, I'm new here sorry. And nevermind, I'm saving up to put 35's on it no matter what, those have got to be the sweetest looking SUV's I've ever seen in my life. How much would that cost me roughly to make 35's fit just a ballpark estimate then I'll stop asking questions?

ballpark figure for 35s, including the tires, id say $12-1800 for tires, and then another $1-2000 for the lift and suspension components. thats prices on new stuff. now of course if you want to go top of the line or name brand and or have someone else do all the work you can start adding to that fast, just like if you buy used or look for deals you can get it a lot cheaper. im into my lift with tires for under $1800 everything was all brand new(minus the FJ80 coils they were 3 years old) and not cheap knock-off stuff. but i ran 285s for a long time with no lift...

You can fit 285's or a 33" Tire with a full 3" Suspension Lift, you will have some rubbing, but nothing major. I had them before the 265/70r17's (32"), and it wasn't a big issue. I do mostly city driving, and the 265's gave me all the clearance I needed

Remember though that the 255's are actually 33.3" tall and the 285's are around 32.7", buy you still may need to cut.

True, I should have been more specific (the 'true 33' comment could have been misleading), also make sure to check the actual manufacturer's measurements. All company's seems to measure their tires slightly different

That's a hard to answer because there are many different ways to go about doing it. The conventional way includes 3" suspension lift (again, many ways to do this: OME, toytec, tundra/80-series) and a 1-2" body lift. You can also skip the body lift and cut up your fenders and firewall a little bit instead. I'd say just for the lift required to clear 35's, you're probably looking at $1000-$1500. And then you'll have an un-drivable truck with stock gears & 35's (especially in Summit County). So you're looking at another $1500 for ring and pinion gears and install to make the whole thing able to get out of it's own way. And then you've got tires, which could easily be another $1000-1500 or maybe $500 for a used set on Craigslist.

Cliffs Notes: probably a $4500 investment to do 35's right.

1 inch body lift. I had to cut the inside of the flares and grind out the pinch weld. and it is still close. go over a bump while turned and it rubs a bit.

Is this on 16x7" wheels with 4⅝ BS?

well if you get everything new I would expect to pay $1200-$1400 for tires and roughly $1500 for lifting it.

I achieved my 35's for $1300 tires and lift. I have a 3" ome lift with no body lift. I rub alot even with trimming and pounding my fenders. I'm planning on getting a 2" body lift soon to solve my rubbing issues. So in all after the body lift I will have spent $1500. Craigslist can be your friend. Bought a set of 35's with half tread for $150 I'm on craigslist every day.

Also consider the following:
-Running stock wheels you will need spacers with 35's or else you will rub so bad on your upper control arms it won't be drivable (even with wheels with less backspacing I would probably still recommend getting spacers)
-Also consider regearing for loss of power. (I'm running stock gears [4.10s] at the moment and its ok but I'm planning on regearing to 4.88s) plan on spending at least $500
