How to get better throttle response FOR FREE!

Loosen up the left nut and tighten the right one. This should take the slack out of the line... This should be mod/maintenance item number one on the DIY list. Did it to my runner and it is like night and day!

Edit: noticed that you have an older year 4runner. I have a 01' that has a different cable set up but it should be the same in removing the slack, loosen then tighten.

Ohh so loosen up the left nut and tighten the right one... Now I understand. I'm probably gonna start doing that soon (Saturday)

Checked mine, was loose, tightened it and it idled too high, loosened it to get the 750 idle and it's loose again. Pedal seems wiggly now, too. :(

My 2000 runner idles just over 1,000 RPM (cold start). I assume that's too high? I haven't adjusted my cables yet, just took note of pedal response and idle RPM. Going to check my cables now.

Checked it out again. Actually it idles cold at 1500 RPM, but once warmed up sits idle at about 500 rpm. Will tighten the cable to bring it to ~700 RPM.

I regret having messed with my throttle after reading this thread.

A few weeks back I adjusted all the cables and set the idle to 1000, pulled the slack out of the other cables and after driving it a few weeks something just seemed wrong.

It is fixed now but only because I had a pro reset the cables to factory specs. Afterwards I was told that what happens is actually that the pedal gets bent over time, not that the cables stretch out.

The cables just look stretched out because they are old. The solution for the "loose pedal" is to bend the pedal back, not mess with the wires because doing so confuses the Toyota computer.

This is what I was told anyways. All I know is that now that I got it looked at, it is idling and shifting better.

You're only supposed to tighten the cables enough to get the slack out. Not pull the throttle mechanism so much your idle increases. The computer is in charge of the idle speed.

Why did you want it at 1000rpm?

I did only tighten them enough to "get the slack out" but since this method is kind of like "eyeballing it" it didn't work out very well for me.

i had the opposite happen. i tightened them all the way and there is still slack! and suggestions as to what i should do? did notice better response but wondering it there is a way to get all the slack off. with it tighten all the way i can still take the cables off the pulleys with my finger. trust me when i say they were really loose before i did this

Similar thing here. I was able to tighten them up today and it help some but there is still slack, mainly in the cruise control cable. However it is at the end of it's threads on the nut. Is there anything else I can do to tighten it up even more?

I want my truck to feel like its on PCP I want stuff to break and me not notice its broken until weeks after. Where's that mod. But back on track, my cables were literally just lying the the slots they were suppose to be in. I tightened them up and cam still pull the off easily. Any easy solution to get some tension?

I did this mod....and did so with success. The trick is to ensure you don't tighten them too much. You really have to listen to your truck, and adjust it ever so slightly.

You could also try resetting the EFI fuse, and see if the computer re-learns the new throttle calibration???

All I know, is the truck is running much better with the cables tightened. If you're not sure about doing the Cruise and Tranny kickdown cable, just adjust the throttle cable.

Weird, something like adjusting your throttle cable seems so obvious to me. ;)

Although more times than not I can't find my way out of a paper bag. :D

i just did this "mod" right now after washing my ride and it actually helped me out allot... my 4runner used to idle at 500 rpm after it was in closed loop and sitting at a light the car would vibrate....not allot but just enough to be annoying.... after adjusting the cables it now idles at exactly 700rpm and its as smooth as butter... so like it was said before.. only "tighten" the cable in small amounts... and as far as bending your pedal back.. arent you essentially accomplishing the same thing but just in reverse order?.. i think so
