How to get the tailgate off of a 95 4runner (without the key)?

The backdoor/ tailgate on my 1995 v6 4runner is in need of replacement or repair. It is developing a large rusted out section and the latch which holds it shut on the right side is broken, I had to take the panel off and use a screwdriver to put it back into the proper position last time I opened it.

I have been watching the local pick n pull for a replacement for a while since they sell them pretty cheap. I haven't been able to find a good one yet since they have all been either smashed in from a crash or they are badly rusted.

While looking over the vehicles at pick n pull (I've been a few times looking for other parts, the tailgate wasn't much of a concern until the latch stopped working) I realized that removing the tailgate isn't as simple as on a pickup and this situation is made worse if the window is up and there polis no battery or key.

I haven't been able to find any information on how to remove the entire part much less doing it with the window still up. I don't really want to experiment with mine without a replacement available but I would like to figure out how to remove it before attempting it so I can bring all the right tools to pick n pull. Has anyone done this or know of a good guide on it?

I know there's a guide somewhere, but honestly don't remember where it was. You pretty much have to crawl inside and pull off the fabric panel of the tailgate, unbolt the metal panel and get the window to come down that way.

your gonna need to bring a jump back or a extra battery. depending on how stripped the pnp runner is. just need to find the two wires to the rear window and hook them to the battery. try the two wires either way till it rolls down. its what i would do

When you pull the rear panel off, you should be able to bypass the window up safety mechanism that keeps the lock from unlocking. It's pretty easy to figure out once the rear panel is off. I've only done it with the window half down, so I can't say if the window will be wedged too tightly in the seals and not let the tailgate come down. If that is the case, it isn't too difficult to remove the window actuator and then the window just slides down. I believe all you'll need is a basic socket set, a few different sized screw drivers and a set of combination wrenches for good luck. A cordless drill makes taking out all the screws go faster. I have never taken the actual tailgate off, so I'm not certain if there are any tricks to it. I do know they weigh a ton. There is a large spring assist thing that helps offset some of the weight to help close them. That might need to come off while the tailgate is closed. Good luck!
