How-To-Guide (TRD CAI) Installation

thanks to TOYSTRY for his excellent writeup; an invaluable complement to Toyota's own instructions.

when swapping the rubber grommets from the old intake to the new TRD, i was curious about the gap pictured below in TOYSTRY's photo... found it odd that there's this opportunity for infiltration of warm air from the engine bay into the CAI.

I think I read before, others mentioned a "whistling" sound. You may have found the reason! Good job. As to your specific concerns, Silicone caulk is your friend......Be safe.

Sun went down on my install

So my buddy who is my mechanical guru told me this install is easy and should take about an hour.... So I had my iPad on the engine/radiator open to TOYSTRY write-up and the black and white terrible directions that came with it... Needless to say it took 4 hours and I was running out of light... Thanks so much for this write-up I would still probably be working in it with out it!

Thanks for the help TOYSTRY!

Glad it's helped so many people. It's definitely not an hour install though. I think it took me about 2.5hrs from start to finish including taking pics.

great write up

Thanks for the great write up! I knocked this out in under two hours. Great pictures and your write up is much much better than the Toyota instructors. After a quick ride, throttle response seems more responsive and I don't hear a "whistle" and the throaty sound is only heard if you mash the pedal. I do 200 miles a week driving back and forth from work. Most of my weekly commute is highway. I'm interested in seeing if there is an improvement in MPG.

So far, I'm impressed.

So I've got a few questions about the TRD CAI:

1) Has anyone managed to make it work with a 2014+ T4R?

2) Any word on a TRD developing a CAI for 2014+ T4Rs?

3) What are people's thoughts on running after market CAIs? Anyone have one that can give us some feed back?

Your comments are much appreciated. Merry Christmas/ happy holidays to everyone!

I bought and installed an AFE CAI from a prior 2012 owner. It fits just fine in the 2014 but you will need to relocate your horn slightly. Should be the same deal with a TRD version. Not a big deal. Just remove one bolt and reverse its location on the fender wall.

But I have to admit I have experienced no measurable gain in anything but induction noise when I accelerate. A Magnaflow cat back system is on the to do list, but I'm not sure whether that will make a noticeable difference or not either. I was hoping for a slight gain in MPG but I'm guessing there is so much computer control on these newer vehicles that a cold air box just doesn't make as much of a difference as it used to.
