How to I determine what year an 5vz engine is and are there years to be avoided.

just look for one with low mileage, they're all solid.

The 96's had head gasket issues that should have all been fixed by now. the rest are all the same. I agree with the last poster. There is nothing on it to identify what year it is.

01-02 is drive-by-wire, so you can look at the throttle body for confirmation.

i can 2nd that. but still.... my 96 has had the heads rebuild but its still running strong with 280K miles.

The 1995-96 head gasket issue was an incident that is irrelevant at this point. If a 1995-96 5VZ does fail, it is because of age and/or neglect. From what I understand, all 5VZ's are the same internally. I've seen cases of 99-00 5VZ's throwing rods but that is only a handful as well. There is really no way of picking the best. If it goes pop then I guess that is your luck.
