How to install LED 3rd brake light?

nice! i here ya i might as well be jobless with the money im not making. kinda sucks i dont get that free time haha

so here is an update i went out to go play around with it and im still curious about my original question so if anyone can shed some light PLEASE DO!

so anyway i guess my 3rd brake light bulb has been burned out for who knows how long and i haven't got an ABS light yet (knockin on wood) so this is good, I should have this thing installed soon and maybe even give a detailed "how to" for this thread

with all my reading on this i read that another guy with an 02 didn't need the resistor either. i wonder if the 01,02's have a diferent system?

It should be pretty easy to investigate the resistor issue. The next person doing this mod should take a volt-meter and measure the different resistances of each light.
 
yeah i almost bought a volt meter today, i guess they come in handy but i have no clue how to use one. I just may have to learn myself on one of these volt meters
 
you may have convinced me just to go get one. haha i think i can figure it out thanks for that link!

ok so i got everything installed and it looks killer! pics pending with a DIY write up. its actually extreamly easy and if i can do it anyone can do it!
 
so yes i have jacked this thread but only for good reasons here is the "how to" for these things its really easy!

start with the hardware and tools. this is all you need

now a lot of guys i guess have removed this weather stripping from the old light and put it on the new one and i think this would be fine if you have the red lens but i dont so i didn't

next unscrew your light and twist the bulb socket out of the old housing, cut the tape back so you have accses to the wires NOTE: the green wire is the power and the white and black is the ground

next get your taps, crimpers what ever you want to call it and put the green wire in first to the slot, isnert the red wire from the new light in the other hole

thanks man! and no worries i think this is a great mod! the light is super bright. im not sure i like the smoke as much as i thought but then again my truck is dirty so maybe after i wash it we'll be good

What ohm and watt resistor did you use? Does it get hot as others have claimed? Also, did you use resistors for your tail lights so the turn signal blinks properly?
 
I didn't use anything for the tail lights, they are just plug and play.

for the brake light i just tapped into the original bulb (which is burnt out) so I think it still sends the 12 volts to the bulb but since its burnt out it wont light up therefore only the LED 3rd lights up. No resistors needed! and no ABS light :bravo:
 
I'm not sure. I know VLEDs has some pretty good ones too. I just heard those things throw out a ton of heat and I didnt want that anywhere near my paint. But yeah maybe someone better quallified will chime in.

I think it will depend on the brand of LED light used. If anyone wants to know what OHM resister to use, simply measure the impedance of the factory lightbulb - correct?
 
Okay, taps instead of resistors, and then no HEAT and no ABS light. Thanks, I'm going to try this and install an LED 3rd brake light. I also wanted to install LED tail lights but first wanted to clear the ABS light and heat from resistors, then I also hear of rapid blinking when LEDs are used for turn signals. You don't have that problem so don't need to get load equalizers.

Anyone else having problems?
 
Okay, thanks for the tip. I also checked the LED tail lights that many are using for 3rd gen runners. The eagle eye one only has LED brake lights. The turn signal and reverse lights are not LED so that's why there is no turn signal issues. If you were to replace with an LED for the turn then you would get that rapid blinking where the system thinks the bulb is out. Anyway, thanks for helping me clear this up. I wanted to install LED brake lights and an LED 3rd brake light, but was hesitant after hearing all these issues.
 
yeah i had the same issues! but then i got rear ended, so gently that she broke my tail light and just cut me check for new ones and i found it a perfect opportunity to buy the LED tails. then my OCD kicked in and i replaced the 3rd.

I am running LED reverse lights just not LED blinkers. and yes you are correct in the hyper flashing. They have LED flashers that you just swap out with your reg flasher if you end up getting the LED blinkers and that will stop the hyper flashing
