How To: Lift Installation (on KDSS equipped vehicles)

I had my lift done at Tandem Automotive in Ft. Worth (Haltom City) and the Toyota Certified Mechanic said you have to re-charge the KDSS (or something like that) to get them back to specs. So I can only assume the guys in the YouTube Hawaii video didn't fully complete the job. Possible that the KDSS may not even be effective after they did their lift. Just my speculation but I'll ask the guy next time I see him.

After my Toytech Boss lift my 4Runner was pretty close to level. Got about 4" of lift in the front and 3" in the back.

As long as you don't open the screws all the way theres no reason to. aka don't mess anything up when you're relieving the pressure via opening the 2 screws a few turns.:boom:

2017 TRD Off Road, with KDSS

I've got my 6112 (preassembly) and 5100 (+ Dobinson) on order. I think that I'm going to give this a shot myself so I'm organizing all the instructions and tips I can get my hands on. I have KDSS and plan to use this thread combined with Sp8ball's/Antman's.

This is a pretty silly question...I hope this isn't a bad sign as I prepare to start this project! Are the pictures for Page 1 of this post showing up correctly? I can see the pictures on Antman, Sp8ball, and other pages of this very post...but I cannot see the pictures on Page 1 of Eddiebx's instructions. Reading page 1 it seems these pictures are pretty important.

Thanks for the collective input / tips everyone has put into this!

preassembled it's wicked easy. unbolt sway bar, tie rod end, UCA from spindle, remove stock assembly, wiggle/fight/force new assembly in. use breaker bar to push the LCA down to fit the taller 6112 in. The OEM bushings in the LCA do not swing freely so it is a bit of a pain. Getting the sway bar back in place can be annoying, theres a few methods on here though. i found a clamp, floor jack and a punch helped align it nicely to get the bolt started by hand. Watch the ball joint on the UCA, the 6112 bolt threads will tear it easily:peep: but electrical tape will work to keep the grease in place until you wait until black friday to order DirtKing uppers lol:rapture:

Does anyone have the pictures from this thread or is it my computer?

Debating if I should attempt thing my self or not yet.

I believe no. If you find full pics / youtube of the KDSS portion let us know :)
The non-KDSS steps are covered elsewhere.

Follow-up: Lift Install KDSS 6112 / 5100

Following up after successfully installing my lift this weekend. I was very nervous at the start of the process but it was totally manageable.

6112 Front
5100 Rear
Dobinson C59-723

I used this instruction set as my baseline:
YouTube

Extremely helpful video. I got familiar with the steps and moved through the entire install pretty fast. Front and rear were completed in about ~5.5 hours with two of us.

Couple pointers:
- These instructions have you detach the KDSS from the sway bar. I had no issues re-attaching the KDSS system...maybe ~5 minutes of alignment.
- Trigger Grips went a long way to help with KDSS alignment (see video).
- We got an extra floor jack and used it a lot to support the KDSS piston in place, maneuver the rear axle, maneuver the LCA, etc. Not required but helped A LOT throughout the process.
- The track bar (on rear re-assembly) was difficult to align. Ended up pushing UP the passenger side with the extra floor jack and alignment slid right into place (literally another <5 min alignment), made easy with the extra floor jack.
- Ratcheting combination wrenches (pass through) went a long way to ease the process, not required but made fast work of difficult to reach bolts (on top of front shock tower and on top of rear strut)
- Two sets of hands goes a long way to help wrestle the coil into the front, pry the LCA out of the way, and move jacks around. Doable solo (as in the video) but would slow things down a lot.

I wish I had more tips...but seriously it was very doable. Do your homework before its up on jacks. Dont force an threads. Good luck!

Thank you to everyone that has contributed to this thread. I spent the last hour or so combing through each response and had a few questions (sorry in advance if I missed an obvious answer).

For my 18OR, I bought a set of bilstein takeoffs from a Pro. I am looking to do a 2" lift across the board, and still maintain the factory rake look. My questions on how to achieve the 2" lift:
  • As the TRD bilstein setup in the front achieves a 1" lift over stock, is a simple solution to get a 1" top plate spacer to achieve the 2" result?
  • For the rears, I've seen people install a spacer in the rear or get new springs (like Dan P below). If going spacer, would it simply be a 2" spacer and reuse the rear springs that came with my 4R? For the Dobinsons springs, it would be the 2" lift springs, correct (c59-275)?

I realize I'm overthinking this, and the answers are probably painfully obvious, wanted to make sure I'm not missing anything.

With your install, did you get the KDSS lean? Did you install a spacer at all?

Sorry for the late response.

I set front 6112 at exact same perch driver and passenger. I set it to 4th perch, per instructions should have been close to 2", but it came out as 1". So i had to redo it, compress springs, etc. I reset it to 6th perch both sides. It came out at 2" vs the instructions that said it would be 2.7". This was with the bilstein coils that are 600lb springs. I dont have substantial armor so i was surprised how different the instructions vs actual was.

I did install the rear dobinson springs designed for KDSS, which have 1 side slightly taller than the other. My car sat level at the beginning, but the extra height on the rear springs resulted in a lean. Since hte car sat level at teh beginning in hindsight i probably should have gotten equal height springs. However it wasn't enough to mess with. So...i'm slightly leaning, but minimal.

Going back to your question...equal perch settings for 6112 did NOT result in a lean.

Sorry if this is a dumb question (I’m new here) but I can’t see the photos in the original post. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I got these out of this thread I think, or maybe the 5100 thread? One of the forum members consolidated everything into the pdf's, now I don't remember who it was, but these are great![/ATTACH]

Is there any chance you have the PDF for the front suspension install as well? I found the links to pdf's in the other thread but the file is compromised and won't allow me to open it!

Dude I'm losing my mind. I had already printed out the rear suspension directions from another thread and mistook that thread with this one. I'm getting ready to install my lift this weekend and have ~15 tabs/ threads open simultaneously.

Thanks for reposting the same PDF for my dumb ass haha

Edit: I meant to respond to your last post in this thread, for whatever reason those PDF's weren't opening:

No prob! I did my shocks all the way around a month or two ago by myself, was fairly easy except having another set of hands would have been way helpful pushing the LCA down. Also, make sure you have a floor jack and a second jack for the KDSS piston. I used a bottle jack. don't strip the bolts in the sway bar end link brackets and you'll be golden! Good luck!

Researching there seems to be serval ways of doing an install with KDSS

Anyone open the KDSS valves, disconnect the UCA socket, and not disconnect the KDSS bar? Using a board on the LCA to leverage it down.

Then lowering and allowing it to settle for and hour before closing the valves.

I have the 6112/5160 combo with 1” springs sitting and waiting to be installed. Dreading doing this solo

Thanks! I’ve given myself all day today and tomorrow to install a Toytec ultimate lift and rear boss shocks/ springs. Before today the most complex thing I’ve done to a car is an oil change... so I’ll need all the luck I can get!
