any idea if this programming procedure works on an 05/06 highlander
I did buy and was able to program both the buttons and the chip for this key using these instructions on a 2008. Thanks so much for saving me $50+

I also bought this key from eBay. Got it programmed to do the FOB. Just need to get the key cut now.

My 03 SR5 V6 came with only one key. I bought two from Amazon for around $20 and had them cut a Ace Hardware for $2. When I followed the procedure for reprogramming I got a double blink instead of a single with both keys. This may be how you can tell if more than 5 keys have been programed. I did the erase procedure using my old key and then reprogrammed the two new keys. Now they both work.

Great post! Once the keys I ordered arrived, it was a simple matter of following the instructions and in a few minutes I had one more spare key and another uncut one that I could swap out with an original key in the black box for the remote start. Surprisingly easy to do and for a fraction of the cost the dealer wanted. I really appreciate that you took the time to post this info nicolachel.

Hey all, I've run into a road block. I've followed the instructions right up until I insert the new key. However the light does not flash steadily or stop. It flashes quickly 2 times and 1 steady flash, then repeats. I know for sure I have not reached the 5 key limit as I am the original owner. Any help please?
So you get the solid immobilizer light when you remove the key (step 4 ) or do you never get the solid light?
I can't remember what the system response was (but it may have been the blinking you describe) but I was having trouble programming mine until I realized that when you are opening and closing the driver's door, watch the door open warning light on the dash and count that light going on and off.
Maybe I was doing it too fast or not closing the door enough but the first couple of times, I couldn't get the 4Runner into learn mode because not every opening/closing was being registered in the ECU. Once I started watching the door open warning light it worked perfect.
Are you using a master key? If I recall correctly, it should have a dot in the metal of the key near the plastic of the key head.
edit: Just looked it up on the internet (for what that's worth
). The dot just means that is uses a 4D transponder. If you have the original keys, black should master and the grey should be valet. The other thing I'm wondering now is if you could have purchased (or received) a 4C transponder key instead of the 4D key you need.

Hmm... I bought mine from the dealer with only one key, granted it was the Acura dealer and the 4Runner was a trade in. I can't go down to the key shop and have one made like I had for my 3rd gen? It has to be ordered special?
There are just two different types of Toyota transponder keys. The outsides look the same. The 4D has the dot on it. If your new key doesn't have the dot, it won't work.

Just bought an '07 V6 SR5 and it only came with one key... we were resigned to living with just the 1 for awhile until we saw this thread. Picked up key on eBay for $9 (one w/ the dimple) and had it cut for free from the VIN at the dealer. After having several Parts and Service employees tell me "you know this won't start the car..." I walked back out to the parking lot and did these steps, and it started 'er up on the first try!

Valet key???
About 6 months ago when I purchased my third (and best yet) 4runner, I asked the seller for a spare key, as this is a must! Especially whenever the only key they currently had was a grey valet key. Well long story short he was telling me how the real owner lost it. well he ended up taking me to some hispanic friend that cut and coded keys out of his truck.... sketchy yes.... until I saw that the "truck" was a $60,000 mercedes dually van! LMAO the guy was able to make a new master key from my valet key and also a new key fob from the old one in about 10 minutes. So I guess my point is don't be hopeless if you lost all your master keys. The most Ironic part is that he drives around to all the dealers and cuts and codes keys for them too....

Some of you may have seen my other post about checking that your key still works in the mechanical door locks. My original keys still worked in the ignition but no longer in the doors. Ones that I had recently cut to the VIN by a dealer worked fine in the mechanical locks.
I decided to replace my oldest keys with new ones. Since I already had four keys registered and wanted to remove the old ones, I decided to try the erase procedure.
The erase procedure works as advertised. Basically;
- Original Key in/out of ignition 5x, insert and leave in on the 6th.
- Starting with the door closed, door open/close 7 times leaving the door closed.
- Remove original key, immobilizer light will come on steady for a second.
Now all the keys but the one you just used are erased from the system. Follow the normal steps to add the new keys and any old keys that are still usable.
