How to make spare chipped keys

We have 2000 Limited Edition 4x4. Lost keys(2). Bought entire new switch with keys. Cant get new keys to reset. Help appreeciated.

This is the 4th Gen forum section, you have a 3rd Gen, you may get more help by posting in the 3rd Gen forum section.

That being said if it's done like a 4th Gen is done you would need to have a working master key to be able to program it yourself or have a Toyota Techstream type scanner to program it, but otherwise any Toyota dealer should be able to do it without having a working master key.

Edit: I did a brief search of the 3rd Gen forum and found the following topic that you could post in to maybe get some help, also the info already posted may help you to go in the right direction to solve your issue.

I recently came across this and did my research both on here and on various other forums.
Some said that it has to be programmed by a dealer/locksmith and some said that only the keys with a small dot near the end of the key blade works. Some also mentioned that walmart/home depot would cut the key.

However most of those information might not be the truth based on my experience. I'm willing to provide a small guide on this for those in need.

How to get a key blank

I bought the key blank from a seller on Amazon and there was no small dot on the key blade at all but it works. Those found on ebay might also work.
So just buy the cheapest one which says "for 03-09 4runner"
Should be less than 20 bucks shipped.

How to cut

I at first went to walmart but they refused to cut it because I didn't buy the key blank from them. Home depot and lowe's did the same thing.
So I asked a local locksmith and he did it for just 5 bucks. (just FYI those keys are made of brass, not steel, so most locksmiths would be able to cut them.)

How to program

Actually it's a super easy if you still have one master key that can start your 4runner. There was a pdf somewhere about how to do it on a Prado but
its not very clear(it would ask you to remove the key from ignition 3 times without mentioning putting it back in at all:eek:) so I'll try to provide a clearer one here:

1. Take the new key and one master key that can start your 4runner(old key) into the 4runner with you and close the driver's door.(immobilizer light should be blinking)

2. Insert old key, remove old key, Insert old key, remove old key,
Insert old key, remove old key, Insert old key, remove old key,
Insert old key (immobilizer light should be off from the first insertion)

3. open and close driver's door six times (immobilizer light should be off)
Step 2 and 3 need to be done in less than 35 seconds(pdf says 35 seconds)

4.remove the old key. (immobilizer light should come on(steady on, not blinking))

5. insert the new key(immobilizer light should be blinking)

Then just sit there and wait, after about one minute the blinking immobilizer light should go off and you're done.

Whole process need to be repeated for any additional keys, the just programmed key could be used as the "old key" for the additional keys.

If there are 5 master keys registered with the immobilizer, it won't accept any more(and I don't know how would it tell you this, so just do a erase if you can't get it to work after trying for a few times). You have to erase them using a similar method(bring in just an old key, insert+remove one more time and open+close one more time, after the 7th close of the driver's door the immobilizer light will stay lighted for one second, remove the old key quickly after that and all but that one you just removed are erased.)

If you don't have any working master key(meaning you only have valet keys). Then I've no idea what could you do other than ask for help from a dealership.

Total cost is less than $25 if you still have at least 1 working master key. Less than 1/5 of what my local dealership wants.

Hope this would be useful for those in need, please post your results if you decided to give this a try.
Excelent, Thank you very much!

Many searching of the internets has left me empty handed trying to find one of these. Anyone know where I can get one? I have a flip key but its still kinda bulky compared to the key with the buttons built into it..

You can find keys with the same FCC ID (HYQ12BBX) on eBay but I still don't think it would work since some of the other numbers probably aren't the same as what the 4runner is.

Upgraded Remote Key Fob for Toyota Tundra Echo 2004 2005 2006 HYQ12BBX HYQ12BAN | eBay

FYI I just bought and tried to program one similar to this and it didn't work. I thought HYQ12BBX was enough to be able to program but no such luck.

I'm still researching how to take a modern Toyota key and make it work in a 4th gen

Ya I would also like to know this. Some of the newer keys look way better! I dig the one I posted above since its the least bulky out of all the options but haven't had any luck finding one that will work.

Just piling on with an additional confirmation that this process works perfectly.

  • Had the hardware store cut it
  • Followed this procedure and it worked perfectly.

Grand total: $17

Congrats! I'm glad this thread is staying alive with success stories every once in a while. It's pretty outrageous what they charge to do something so simple.

I bought that exact flip key on Amazon.
I took it to Lowes and they cut it for me.

I used some youtube videos on how to program the transponder and the fob.
It works great. Only problem is the buttons are not lower than the body, so you can accidentally hit panic and also roll your back window down by accident.

Got that same one from Amazon and it works great. YouTube video for programing chip worked like a charm.
Lows and Home Depot are lame in my area and would not cut it. Went to a locksmith and he did it.

The Panic button is very easy to push by mistake and it was going off all the time. Ended up opening the case and removing the small switch off the circuit board hence completely eliminating it. Problem solved :)

I'm seriously considering doing that. Sometimes turning the car off I'll accidentally hit the panic button.
I was thinking some crazy glue on the corners of the button might do the trick as well.

I suppose superglue will do the trick if you don't want to crack the thing open and have to put it all back together.
Only other gripe I have with it is I wish the key blade was aligned with the case and not at a 90 degree angle but I can live with that.

The master key in my 2004 was really worn down - to the point that it wouldn't unlock the door or hatch, and wasn't great in the ignition.

I went to a local locksmith. He had the ability to clone the master key chip - which was really cool. Took the master key and dropped it into some kind of 'scanner' branded as Yale, pressed a couple of buttons on his phone, took one of the stand-alone 4d67 chips and dropped it in the Yale tool and 5 seconds later it was done. The stand along chip drops into a key that was then cut to match the lock. The truck treats it as the master. $80, which isn't cheap - but I was concerned I was going to end up with an unusable master key - which would have been a much more expensive problem.

in case you want to make more, you can just buy the blank dot / 4d67 key online and then take to your local dealer to have them cut it by VIN for ~$10 for fresh factory cut key. then to program key yourself, steps are listed in the original post.

Ah - I was under the impression that newly added keys weren't considered master keys - more like the valet key. Good to know!

With my luck I would superglue the button and then it would get stuck 'on" and triggering the alarm continuously, I would much rather pop it open and remove the contact pad.

Also if you're not careful the superglue could seep into the body and might totally seal it so you can never get it open again to replace the battery!

newly added keys all function as master keys and can program additional master keys unlike the valet key that cannot (programmed as subkey). you can have 5 master keys registered with the immobilizer.

one thing to note is that because your locksmith just cloned your single master, if one of them is stolen, you will be unable to clear the stolen key from the immobilizer because it shares same transponder code as your remaining key. you'd need another unique master key to clear.

you may want to consider getting another master key cut and programmed yourself (not cloned). then use this 3rd key to then clear the first 2 keys that share the same transponder code. and then use 3rd key to program 1st and 2nd key separately so that you end up with 3 unique master keys.

just an FYI for my Toyota parts dealer was $45 for the master key and then $15 to cut it. So $60 for a new key total. Probably cheaper anyplace out of the SF Bay Area.
Then they said I'd have to take it to service to program for more $$.

But you can follow any of the instructions here to program the new transponder key.
