How to make spare chipped keys

With my luck I would superglue the button and then it would get stuck 'on" and triggering the alarm continuously, I would much rather pop it open and remove the contact pad.

Also if you're not careful the superglue could seep into the body and might totally seal it so you can never get it open again to replace the battery!

I tried to take it apart. But it felt like I was going to break it. I could only pop off the batter cover and that felt like it was going to break.

I've had this one for a couple years now. Works perfectly, home Depot cut it for free, programmed with the door/lock method. The panic button is on the side and is pretty stiff. I think it's gone off by itself like once when it was in my pocket with another big bunch of keys.

I bought another one to try and use on my GX470 but I haven't been able to get it programmed yet. Need to try techstream next

I got that off eBay and programmed it myself, remote and transponder.

What is the problem!!?

I tried to do the steps, but every time I put the old key in, the immobilizer light comes on, it goes off when I take it out...I kept going and after the door step, it goes back to flashing. Tried 5 times and stopped due to frustration! Why doesn't my system work?

Thanks, a decade later

1. Take the new key and one master key that can start your 4runner(old key) into the 4runner with you and close the driver's door.(immobilizer light should be blinking)

2. Insert old key, remove old key, Insert old key, remove old key,
Insert old key, remove old key, Insert old key, remove old key,
Insert old key (immobilizer light should be off from the first insertion)

3. open and close driver's door six times (immobilizer light should be off)
Step 2 and 3 need to be done in less than 35 seconds(pdf says 35 seconds)

4.remove the old key. (immobilizer light should come on(steady on, not blinking))

5. insert the new key(immobilizer light should be blinking)

Then just sit there and wait, after about one minute the blinking immobilizer light should go off and you're done.

Thank you! Thought I was screwed there for a minute

SORRY, just saw the answer to my question above so ignore below...

Works great, thanks! Does the newly programmed chip key now become a master key? I only have the one master original key, and now the spare newly programmed key, so I didn't want to lose the original key if that's not the case.

Thanks

Valet key only

Great thread! Here's the issue I'm facing. I 89 Toyota 4Runner and unbeknownst to me, with only one key that came with the vehicle, I only have a valet key.

Now, the teeth are so worn down on the only key I have that works that it is not turning the tumblr. I brought it to the dealership and had this confirmed and asked if they could cut me a key using the VIN number. They did and it turns like butter but they can't program it because I don't have a master key. Weird thing is, it has a black head on the key.

I went to Ace hardware to get it programmed and a warning came up on their system that said it can only be done with a master key.

I have locksmiths that say they can do it but I also understand that I will get locked out of the ECU if it is done wrong with a valet key.
Is it possible to clone a valet key?
Are there any other options besides flashing the ECU for hundreds of dollars?

Finally got around to getting this little mod done. It succeeded - immobilizer light went off, and I'm able to start my 2005 4runner with the switch-blade copy.

However, (3) remote buttons don't work. Is this expected? Do I still need my original remote? A little underwhelmed and disappointed if this is the case.

Not much to add to this topic. I bought ebay chipped keys and remotes. I had dealer cut them according to VIN code so they are effectively new from factory. I watched a few how to videos on programming keys. It was easy. Remote programming was easy as well. Ebay remotes have great range and work fine. The only gripe I have is the alarm horn button is too easy to accidentally push.

Wait... is there a separate procedure for programming the remote part of the switchblade key? You have a link?

Thinking back on this, I bought my chipped key from the dealer and had them cut it. I programmed the key myself. Fobs were ebay knockoffs which I also programmed. Youtube how to videos are easy to follow. I have three complete sets now.

Is anyone struggling to get this working? I’ve gotten the sequence correct with the master key as the immobilizer light stays on. However when I insert the new cut key, the immobilizer light blinks on, off, on, break, on, off, repeat. As per the TSB its code 2-1. I’ve got two new transponders so I tried both and have same issue.

Full disclosure I’m replacing a busted flip key and have done this before years back with zero issues. I originally got the code that I have too many keys registered, so I was able to clear it and start over. Getting the same results. Looked at YouTube videos and other treads and I’m doing the initializing correct and not sure what else it could be (despite a bad transponder, but two bad keys?)

Are the 2 new keys OEM keys or aftermarket?
