I like having the notifications for the quotes. I'm down for the majority vote though. It's just nice to know if someone quoted you in a thread that you forgot about or may want to respond in.

Whoa I didn't realize I was getting emailed too. I like the notification bar up top but not all the emails.
I just looked through the user cp and I am going to eat my words. There are a couple things that you can edit for email preferences but not that.

BUT, I still want email notifications from threads that I want to follow.

Unfortunately, the side effect of this is that a lot of people (including myself) will elect to turn off all notifications...which will lead to threads that just end up dead with no response.
Hell, just going on this site and clicking the upper right hand corner to clear all the notifications (on site) is painful enough...and then you have to go to your email box and clear repeated email notifications is just painful.
Yeah, all notifications are turned OFF for me at this time...i don't need for my email to get "spammed" by this site...and for people who have posted a lot on this site (like me), this is a huge problem.
EDIT: actually, i can't even seem to find where you can turn OFF notifications!! So, i guess that i will add this site to my spam folder!

As I said before, there is just a global off switch for quote notifications. The thing is that by default, when you respond to a thread, you will be subscribed to that thread automatically and will get notification once anyone quotes you on the same thread.
Shall we put it to a vote?

I've appreciated getting notified of quotes. in long threads that you post in its really helpful. say like when what's been quoted is a page or two back and you never would of looked other wise. I turn off my subscriptions to threads specially as they get off topic so if someone quotes me and gets back on topic I get notified.
however the negative thing is getting double emails one for a quote and one for a subscribed thread post on new threads where your back and forth on a subject for a bit.
it would be cool if we could tweak it a bit more to limit some emails. though is sounds like its all or nothing unfortunately.

Here is my opinion, for what it's worth:
I post quite a bit here as this is the only forum which I am a member.
I do not receive ANY email notification from this site for anything. I have that function disabled. If I want to know what is going on, or if I want to know any thread updates I just check in with that thread or check my notification box for PM's, likes, reputations, etc. This is quite different from someone like Thai. Is my way right? Is Thai's way a better way? Who knows!
My point is everyone does things a little different and there is no right or wrong way, just a different way. No matter what changes or stays the same there will be some that either like it or dislike it because of that dreaded concept called CHANGE.
Now that I have expounded on the virtues and pain of change, I actually think that changes such as tags, quotes and mentions, along with the other updates like larger PM capacity are good! It freshens the site up a bit and allows users such as myself to see what is happening. I don't know about other people but when I am trying to help someone with an issue or frame a complex concept (to some) it can be quite time consuming. This post here http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/132004-premium-unleaded-fuel-test-unscientific.html for example took about 20 minutes. I had to look up a few things to make sure the data I posted was correct and my source could be cited as actual fact should the need arise. In some cases I have taken an hour or more to make sure everything was correct before submitting it here. With that said it's nice to see if others are quoting or using factual statements correctly and "playing it forward" so to speak.
I vote we keep the changes for a period of time, make a "complaint" thread here in the Off-Topic section so people can voice their opinions. Only time will tell if these modifications are a help or hindance. Re-evaluate the changes after a time based on opinion. My $2.00 lol.
