How to prevent white buildup on battery bracket

Does anyone know how to prevent this white powder from forming on the screw that holds the battery bracket? Thanks. I clean it off completely and it keeps coming back.

Permatex makes a good one. Comes in a small spray can, can't think of the name right now.

You can also use baking soda to clean it. It'll neutralize the battery acid. But be careful not to get into the battery vent holes, which will ruin the battery.

You can make a paste consisting of 3 parts baking soda, 1 part water. Grab a damp cloth, apply the paste and scrub the corrosion away from the terminals. After cleaning, it's good to use some sort of product like dialectic grease or petroleum jelly to prevent corrosion in the future. Should clean her up good!

After cleaning it up put in a optima battery and you will no longer have to deal with the battery acid eating things up.

Back in the day people would glue a penny next to the terminals. Now just buy a dry/gel cell batt and be done w it.

petroleum jelly works well..just make sure u clean the area before u apply it..

And the white powder continues. I just don't get it. Is it coming out of the battery? Is it acid?

the white powder is a result of leaking fumes from the battery, if u keep that battery, all the cleaning will not stop it from coming back. like 03 4x4runner said, clean everything , then get an optima or something similar. just my 2c

You can also use Coke to clean the terminal. I tried it once and copper looked brand new.

I second the Fluid Film, fantastic stuff! I use it every year before winter to coat anything I am worried about. Doesn't seem to harm any paint, plastics, or rubber either!

Ok thanks. That battery may actually still be under warranty. The previous owner gave me re receipt.

My wife camry had that problem. No matter how many cleaning or protective coatings I put, it always came back. Now a few years later she has a new battery and no problems. ODD.

Thanks very much. You're right, this battery is definitely leaking. It was purchased in September 2009 and it's already crap.

So it sounds like the Optima is the way to go? I phoned up my local parts store and they quoted me $300 for an Optima. Anyone know where the best deal is? I live in Canada but am driving down to Seattle soon.
