How to remove reflector from dome lights

Hi, I ordered the 7 LED light package from here Premium SMD LED Interior Lights Package For Toyota 4Runner and managed to install 5 of the 7. The last 2 require me to somehow get into the dome lights, all the guides ive seen show it as being pretty basic, imagine my surprise to discover a metal deflector blocking my access to the bulbs inside.

Anyone have any idea how to get in there? I tried removing the reflector and pulling the bulbs out without removing it but neither have worked. I'm guessing I might have the remove the entire unit itself to get at the reflector? I haven't seen any guides on that so I'm really scared though.


For those looking to install the other 5 its really easy, the back map light pops off if you insert your screwdriver between the clear plastic and the gray plastic where the tabs are (theres 4), and the other 4 side courtesy lights pop off if you put your screwdriver into the right side, if there not popping off easy you got the wrong side!

It's been forever since I had my map light assembly out so I forget, but is there enough room to wrap some electrical tape at the tip of the bulb and then gently pull it out? If not, all you need to do is remove the center rectangular clear lens piece in between the two map light lenses, and then slowly and gently pry out the metal reflector. Gently is key here, the metal is very thin and easily deformed. If I recall correctly the metal peice is only held in there by friction around some plastic posts so it does not take much effort at all (you'll see what I mean once you dig in).

Once you have the reflector out, there will be plenty of room to wrap electrical tape around the bulb and then pull it out. It will come out no problem.

I think the metal piece has two pieces sticking into the frame up and down since I did try removing it. Ill try the tape and ill go take another look at it to see if it can be removed thanks.

You know what, you are absolutely correct, I had my entire map light assembly down and stripped into pieces so I lost track. Those tabs would be in the way if you try to remove it as is.

If all else fails, pulling down the assembly is not too bad, you just need to pop off the sunglass holder and unscrew a couple of screws then drop the entire thing.

No reason to take the reflector apart. Do the tape trick. Any kind of tape works and it is sooooo easy.

Those bulbs are in there tight.
Whatever you do, DON'T try to twist the bulb while pushing on it. You will then have to remove that overhead console because the bulb and socket will be up inside there. (Ask me how I know....:redface

As mentioned: wrap some tape around the bulb and gently tug on it.
Or, if you find a piece of vinyl tubing that will snug around the bulb, same procedure.
Lastly....try putting a latex glove on...that will give your fingers more gripping power.

Last resort...remove the console. Access to the bulbs is easy then.

The tape worked, just wrapped it around and used a screwdriver to snug it tight, then pull Took like 5 tries for each though haha. Thanks everyone!
