How to run 285's without spacers..

Hey guys, so my LC wraps came in and I was curious if there was any way to run 285's without spacers, simply because I've heard that with spacers comes more issues than wanted as well as discount tire co refusing to mount your tires... I'm planning on going with the treadwright guard dogs m/t and just need to know, are spacers really that bad..?

They are not bad per se, just an extra "moving part" in some people's opinion.
Just take care to maintain all the interfaces on a regular basis and you will likely be fine.

If you want to avoid them altogether, get smaller tires or different wheels.

Which ones would I need to get inorder to run them? I understand they're like you said not bad but with the lc/tundra lift 265's will just look goofy:(

IIRC you need atleast a 4.5" BS'd wheel for most trucks. However, I ran duratrac 285s with stock 16" split 3 spokes but I think I was just one of the few that got away with it.

Other options would be to shave the stock UCA or get aftermatket UCAs.

Are you still against spacers? I saw your comments on previous posts and what not. But with BS and offset, i'm lost to be honest..

My Volvo has 1" spacer/adapters all the way around and I drive the piss out of that car. Mountains autocross sliding you name it. Never once had any issues with them. And they are eBay spacers.

Yes those would work but they say 5 x 5 bolt pattern even though the picture shows a 6 lug. You want it to be 6 x 5.5

Something like this would be more like it. (Funny these actually picture a 5 bolt pattern but the details say 6) 16x8 6 on 5.5 with 4.25" BS Series 52 Rock Crawler - Black Steel Wheel

Or even a 16x7 6 on 5.5 with 4" BS. 52 Rock Crawler Series - Gloss Black Powder Wheels

Tons of people run spacers but I don't want to deal with them.

Just an FYI. I'm running 4.5 backspace, and still had to do some trimming on my lower front bumper valance, and had to remove my front mud guards.

It's all gonna depend on how much lift you have.... but I'm running the Tundra Struts, with a Toytec Top plate spacer.... and still had to do what I posted above.

There is no problem with spacers if you get hub centric spacers that are made to run with our oem rims. I run 1.25 front spacers for my 285 treadwrights and I notice no difference driving.

Wheel spacer are just another part thrown in the mix but show me any evidence that says wheel spacers are bad. I ran 1.5" wheel spacers on my last truck and jumped it, beat the piss out of it and all sorts of shit. I never had a problem.

Like said above, wheel spacers are just another added part. They are not bad if you take the right precautions with them. Some people swear that they ruin wheel bearings prematurely, I honestly think it's a joke. Yes, there is added stress to the hub since your pushing the weight further out but I do not think it's anything these trucks can't handle. I've been running 1.25" all pro wheel spacers for a couple years now and have not had any problems with them. Use extended thread lug nuts to bolt spacers on hub (see picture below), use blue loctite, and torque them to spec. Everything will be fine.

As far as driving with them, it will be something you'll get use to very quickly and forget you even have them on. You might have to do a little trimming on the pinch weld but 5 minutes with a angle grinder and you're done.

Now I don't know if you actually need them, but sounds like from the people running 285's and aftermarket wheels and even some oem wheels, you'll need them.

So with those rims I shouldn't necessarily have to run spacers? I've got the 97 limited w/ elocker not sure if that makes a difference!

Was the trimming or whatever hard? And I just received my LC 8's for the back up next are the toytec/eibach springs and bilstien 5100's all around!

How do you like those treadwrights ? That's what I plan on getting.. But what kind of spacers?

So you like the allpro over spidertrax ?!

I love treadwright, will never run another tire for the rest of my life, this is my third set. Wife has ran two sets, I have driven them on 1500 miles trips. My two buddy's run them. I have the new fully wrapped retreads that seem to be a lot beefier with the extra rubber wrap on the sidewall. Im using the 1.25" spidertracs and it clears perfect with stock rims.

You either need to get the perfect wheel to fit them or just run the spacers. Discount Tire Co can work on spacers they just don't like to. I know I work for them. If your not too sure on what wheel to go with just go in to a Discojnt tire and tell them what you need. If it doesn't work they'll get the right one that work. I have a 96 limited and I'm running spacers and never had any issues. Me and my friends have busted struts shocks my friend even bent his rear axle on his pre runner and the spacers always held never one issue.

right on, thankyou for your feed back man! Although I'm 18 my dad think its a terrible idea for me to run retreads... But say with » F-5 MODEL these would i still need spacers? But either way I guess i'll go spacers because its cheaper than a whole set of rims, do you recommend the spidertrax over all pro?

I have ran spidertrax on 3 different toyotas since 2007. Never any problems. Discount will work on the wheel spacers it just depends on the shop. If you have a peerless around you they work on spacers all the time. At least they do here in CO. But if you get the right back spacing on a wheel there will be no spacer needed. I have 285's with stock 3rd gen wheels.

Spidertrax, Bora, All-Pro, etc.. they're all made out of the same material. Craftsmanship however goes a long ways. Don't go with a random company and you'll be ok. Go with a company who's been around a while and with good reviews. I like the all pro's. They are affordable and nothing fancy about them but they work and fit perfect. I don't need fancy anodized blue wheel spacers :D

I have talked with the treadwright guys and they claim to never had a tire blowout or tread walk off the tire. If you research people with blown treadwrights you find maybe 1 or 2 people ever show proof of one blowing out.

Think of it this way. Retreads have a bad name because truck drivers drive the tires till they BLOW! Why replace a rear trailer tire if it still works, they dont car about tread or the blowout since the other tires on the axle will still be okay, so they run them till they blow. My dad was a trucker so I know this is why they blow them all the time, he said he would put over 100k on a retread.

Also new tires can sit for years before you purchase them. So they can actually be rotted before they are sold. Retreads are inspected three times during retread process meaning the tires has been checked more than a new tire. This was info I found off a youtube video of people testing retreads and pretty much proved they are just as safe or safer than a new tire due too the checks and balances.

I ran 285 BFG's on the stock split 3 spoke wheels with no spacers for awhile. They rubbed a little on the UCA but they were fine. I did end up adding some 1/4 inch wheel spacers to get a little more clearance.

IMO, either pick up some hub centric wheel spacers (i like Spidertrax but others are good too), or get some 8 inch wide wheels that have 4-4.5 inches of backspacing.
