How to run a compression test?

I'm sorry if this has been asked already but my search capability is bound to tapatalk. I've been through the FAQ and haven't seen anything on this. Was wondering if anyone had written up a how-to compression test our engines.

I understand the theory behind it:
1. Disconnect power to fuel pump.
2. Remove spark plugs
3. Install compression tester
4. Start engine with throttle open


Does that sound right?


Also, would i be putting everything(intake box,MAF) back together on the pass side after removing plugs and before testing?

I've never done compression tests that in-depth. All I've ever done (and with great success) is:

1) Disconnect spark plug wires
2) Remove spark plug to test compression
3) Install compression tester
4) Crank engine (couple seconds to ensure full compression reached)
5) Repeat for every cylinder

That's all that is really needed

I think you are only supposed to remove the spark plug that you are testing . leave the rest in ? Then put the spark plug back in , and move the tester to the next cylinder?

Don't forget to remove the fuel relay, unless you like flooding your engine...

In addition to your initial list:
1. all spark plugs out when performing test
2. likely need charger on battery to make sure that it does not affect results.
3. looking for more than 10% difference between cylinders.

You HAVE to block the throttle open to get correct results,period.

Yes, besides all plugs removed you must hold engine wide open throttle.

If you have a good battery charger put it on the battery during the test.
