How to sweeten the deal?

Since trying to get invoice pricing probably isn't going to happen when I negociate the price for a 2012 I'm looking for ideas to help sweeten the deal.

I'm thinking of things like getting dealer price for a TRD-CAI, TRD oil cap, TRD radiator cap, other 'standard' accessories, rear Toyota & 4RUNNER emblem (for blacking out) and getting several free-while-I-wait changes to programmable features and cheap (free?) extended warranty.

Since I'll be paying cash, lower financing won't help for me. Similarly, deals on ‘free’ extra service won’t help much since I will be using Wix filters and Amsoil.

Any additional suggestions to help sweeten the deal???

I don't think they care about cash as they will get the money anyways. Once I agree on the price of the basic car I get all the accessories added at invoice cost.

Good luck.

How to sweeten the deal

In this economy cash does have one advantage..... Loans are hard to come by unless you have stellar credit and cash means a sale today; not having to wait for a loan approval/disapproval. I have always paid cash for all my vehicles and it helps a little if you can just hand them a check on the spot. They are greedy for the sale and the easier you can facilitate it the better chance for a sweeter deal.

Call another dealerships around your area until you get what you want. Be ready to hear a lot of BS that a price you are looking for doesn't exist, package you want doesn't exists and so on.

At the final moment my negotiation, I had the dealer agree to sell me all TRD parts at their dealer cost, applicable to anything I wanted. So far I picked up the TRD air filter (which they gave me for free after trying to charge me more than cost, very cool result for me), oil cap, and forged wheels. I retain the option on the supercharger if I ever want it.

Do the deal via email. Invoice price at least if not better. They will still make a profit. Not hard to get.

Price you truck up via the Amex program, print it out and walk into several dealers and explain you can purchase said truck at said price online. If they'd like your business locally they'll have to do better. I managed $1300 below invoice on a loaded LE. Not all dealers will be willing to play so you might have to try a few. Hell you could always get it through the program. Read the details, they ordered mine even though it says in stock vehicles only. Of course, they never asked to see my sheet either ;)

Bought a 2012 LE at $500 below invoice, no negotiating. Dealer had to trade for the vehicle. Just offer your price to the internet/fleet manager that you want to pay invoice, send him your ability to buy and trust me someone will take your offer. If not, I'll send you to my guy and you can fly in and drive home.

i'm surprised no one chimed in about getting better tires put on as part of the deal...

the stock tires are crap if you want to do anything offroad. I wish I had negotiated this into my purchase instead of having to sell the stock ones on craigslist and buying destination ATs from Tires Plus. I would highly suggest this as a way to "sweeten the deal"

they should be doing the customizations (window control with remote, etc.) for free anyway.

Very good point. I mistakenly assumed I could trade my oem tires in on new
ones. Wrong. Noone even wanted them - so now I'm using them as I will not throw them away. Even if you won't offroad, get some good tires.

I think it depends on how many miles on the OEM tires and who you are dealing with. I had 1600 miles on my OEM's prior to trading. I really thought that I would only get 25.00 per tire if anything. I was very pleased to find out Discount tires, after they called the Manufacturer ( Dunflops), and explaining my concerns, Dunlop authorized full refund. 160.00 per tire. This, in conjunction with the sale price of the tires I bought at the time, got me 4 new tires installed and out the door for less then 100.00!

Having the Dealer do this prior to any miles on the tires should be relatively easy........

x2. i had the dealer swap out the Dunflops for Duratracs so i didn't drive a single mile on those stinking turds.

What concers did you cite, that they sucked?

It felt as though the OEM tires were going to roll off the wheel when making a turn at moderate speeds, let alone high speed. This, after trying various inflation values. I forget now the exact OEM tire rating, but I know it was a passenger car tire P+ or the like. But really, that rating of those tires on an almost 5lb 4 wheel drive truck is, IMHO weak at best. I needed stiffer side walls to feel safe. Bottom line, I explained to the tire rep who relayed my concerns (while I was standing there listening to both sides of the conversation) to the manufacturer that I simply did not feel safe with those tires. I think the "safety" argument is what got the manufacturers attention and a good refund.

I'm in the same boat. With only 400 miles on my dunlops, I called about 15 different shops and the highest trade in I was offered was $25/tire. Now I'm trying to decide whether to just keep driving on these tires or to buy some new ones and try to sell the dunlops on CL. Since I don't plan to do any serious offroading, I will have to stick with them for a while at least, possibly the whole life of the tire.
