how to tell what gear

I bought a 95 with v6 and am trying to figure out what gear is in it. its stock I think . is there a way to tell by the vin? or id tags. hopefully 4.88 for my 86

Most likely 4 10s. What's the axle code on the VIN plate? You can look up your vin to be for sure.

2nd gen with automatic and v6 had 4.88 as a option from the factory.
another way to tell is to drop the drive shaft and the pinion shaft end by the nut is painted and the colors correlate with a gear ratio look on 4crawlers website for the list of colors and there matching gear.

you can count the teeth and divide the larger number by the smaller number. or can get a ball park figure by spinning the tire and watching the driveshaft or prop shaft spin. if it spins say approx 4 revolutions per one revolution of the tire then you have 4.10

not recommended to do this to determine Toyota ratio because of the many close ratios they used.

I've learned not to trust pinion paint on these older trucks, too many have been regeared. The tire spinning method works if you're careful - put chalkmarks on the tire and the driveshaft, count revolutions carefully, and do it three times to make sure you're accurate.

The best way of course is to count teeth on the ring and pinion.
