Hello all, first post. First of all thanks for putting this site together - after I signed up I spent about 30 minutes just looking at the reference links at the top of the 3rd gen forum. Holy cow.
My questions are related to Evap/Emissions codes. I have a 2001 4Runner, SR5, V6, with 180K.
About 18 months ago "Check Engine", "VSC TRAC" and "TRAC OFF" all turned on. Didn't notice any change in performance, so I ignored it for a while.
Earlier this year, take it to Autozone to run codes, and they return P1135 and P0446, which they tell me could be a number of things but likely won't affect the car's performance.
More recently this year, while I was getting a leaky differential seal replaced, I asked the shop to fix the check engine light as well. They call me up, bury me in technical jargon and quote me a new A/F sensor; parts and labor ~$250-300. Clear the codes, drive it away.
50 miles later, lights come right back on so I bring it back to the shop. They run the diagnostic and claim it's a new code which didn't appear before. They clear it, suggest a few things they might fix, including another A/F sensor (process of elimination?) and maybe even replacing the canister. They can only guess in the $600 range. Hand me a bill for $50 and tell the light will probably come back on.
They're right. 50 miles later, "Check engine."
So now I'm sitting on one code, P0446 Evap system vent control malfunction. It doesn't seem to affect my car's performance, but that won't matter if I ever part ways with the 4runner because it'd never get sold with "Check engine" lights on. Furthermore I don't like looking at a "Check engine" light, it's unsettling.
Fact of note: when parking in the garage, I'll turn off the car and occasionally catch the smallest transient whiff of gas vapor. Possibly related?
Is the charcoal canister something I can myself replace? I cannot for the life of me find one anywhere online. I've never worked on this 4Runner yet, but being a former 1986 Audi 5000 owner I'm accustomed to undertaking some beastly parts replacements.
Appreciate suggestions or advice. Thanks in advance!
