Howdy from Valencia!

Just picked up this 5th gen, after having a great 2 year ownership of a 3rd gen that another past forum owner and overlander built. I just tried to maintain it well, but quickly found myself lusting for that 4.0L torque compared to the old 3.4L, and (honestly) that 90s Lexus-esque bulletproof (if slow) and buttery automatic.

Found this 2018 TRD Off Road w/ KDSS, Atrac, eLocker, etc, without power passenger seat, no heated seats or sunroof @ Hamer Toyota in Mission Hills, CA... and had to have it!

Will probably keep this one stock (or close) until I pay her off in a couple years, but really itching to get her up to Mammoth, Tahoe, and the Carrizo Plain!

Hey, it's all about frame of reference.

For instance, consider me coming from a 3rd gen lol. 217 ftlbs, probably for only a few hundred rpms, since I think they didn't have variable timing on either exhaust or intake.

The 5th gen has ~60-70 ftlbs more on 91 octane, across maybe 4-5x the amount of rev range, due to variable timing, and improvements in fuel injection.

Along with almost 50% more horsepower, and an extra gear that helps keep it in peak torque a lot more often, it really is nice.

280 lbft of torque is really not too far off from what V8s used to make back in the day... This is a good thread on the topic I found while researching what gen to upgrade to:

Hi Owen,
Nice looking rig. I have the same vehicle in a 2015 Trail Edition. If you do nothing else for a few years get some rock sliders on there to protect those rocker panels. Look at Domello Off Road in Riverside. If you get out that way you can save on shipping.
I bought the regular straight slider for less than $700. I bought them unpainted and initially painted them grey. Then I repainted them black recently. I have 5 coats of Rustoleum primer and paint on them, mostly with a brush.
I've been through Carrizo Plain but never gotten farther than the Vsitor's Center off the main road through the park. I saw antelope up close one time. Let me know if you want some company for an off road trip. I'm in Pasadena.

Awesome, nice color choice! I grew up in SCV...20+ years. My parents still live out there, all though they are moving to the East Coast soon. As stated in several other threads I am actually moving to the OC in a couple of weeks. I always need an excuse to come eat at Vincenzo's, Chi-Chis, and Cousins though so you might see me tooling around up there.

BTW, when I put on my lift I broke a wheel stud. Hamer was closest for parts. As I was walking out there was an inferno red TRD Pro Tacoma, window sticker showed $43k with a $10k markup to $53k. Sales guy says "You thinking of getting a TRD Tacoma?". I said "If i was it wouldn't be from a dealership that marks it up $10k". Hope they gave you a good deal. :thumb:

Looks close - but this one has a 12/17 build, and had 1 mile on the odo! I could barely believe my luck.

Do you mind mentioning how much you paid? I looked at one CPO truck at Hamer (2014 Trail) and they wouldn't budge off of their price at $37K. They sat on it for almost 3 months and I pestered them on and off to make me a deal. No way was I going to pay new truck prices.

Then I found out they sold it at a dealer auction (probably for less than what I would have offered). Now it's at a dealer in Fremont listed at $39K.

I paid $39.5k, which is just a little more than a few others paid in much lower-demand/income states. I was willing to pay a tiny premium since it had ONE mile... as I'd never seem a car that low and am really particular on the break-in process.

I'd never pay $37-$39k for a 2014 unless it had a ton of useful mods.
