HULK Build Thread

SCARY SHOP TIME....but successful!

It was time for the OME 861's...........

So this started as a routine rear coil swap before I had weekend guests, figured 2 hours tops............but oh no, I was OUT OF PRACTICE!!!!!!!!! .....and made some stupid decisions

Starting out getting up there, along with some before measurements of the rear heights:

IMG_3283.jpg~original

And just one of my baby, for fun:

IMG_3284.jpg~original

BAAD DECISION #1: Truck does not fit in shop (has not for some time), but I could usually get in farther than this if I did not need to jack up back end

IMG_3289.jpg~original

BAAD DECISION #2: Powder coated wheels seized themselves onto the hub, after many engineered attempts, including...but not limited to; ratchet straps, pulleys, maul, mallets....I, in all frustration chained to 4 wheeler. This WORKED, but I CAUTION IT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA!!!!!!!!! Could have yanked entire rear end out of vehicle

IMG_3295.jpg~original

IMG_3296.jpg~original

OK, Now maybe I can get to the actual project........OME 861's. Beautiful looking progressive coils that will hopefully get truck back to original SS 1.2 ride rake and not be too stiff

IMG_3285.jpg~original

IMG_3287.jpg~original

BAAD DECISION #3: I was unable to get a good enough bite on the floor jack to get the axle tweaked enough to pull LC 7 wraps. I put 1 too many strokes on the jack and lifted vehicle instead of just axle. Being on unlevel ground.....WHOLE TRUCK TOPPLED. Scariest event yet for the Hulk

IMG_3300.jpg~original

TO FIX THIS I NEEDED TO GET THE HI-LIFT OUT AND JACK VEHICLE UP FROM THE HITCH RECEIVER, WHICH IT SHOULD ALSE BE NOTED THAT THE HULK FELL WITHIN 6 INCHES OF THE SIDE OF MY SHOP.....I DID NOT GET PHOTOS OF THIS OPERATION, AS IT WAS SCARY

I got this taken care of, truck back on jack stands and called it a night. Called VARunnerchic to vent, and hit the sack after 3 cold beers, and an incredible amount of frustration.

Day #2.....Decision time, put wheels on and just wait for a proper time to get on a level surface for this 'easy' project.......or power through this to completion. Well, I thought 'What would Bruce Banner do?' Of course, decision made to push on......:)

Step #1 (after getting truck secured and lifted) - Remove end link top bolts, as well as bottom eye bolt on rear shocks for maximum travel. I also used the factory jack to aid in tweaking axle

IMG_3299.jpg~original

IMG_3301.jpg~original

Step #2 - Simply remove old coils, and put new ones in (with proper alignment in the seats...)

IMG_3302.jpg~original

IMG_3305.jpg~original

IMG_3306.jpg~original

IMG_3308.jpg~original

AND FINALLY THE AFTER PHOTOS!!!!!!!!!

IMG_3320.jpg~original

IMG_3322.jpg~original

IMG_3323.jpg~original

IMG_3324.jpg~original

It should also be noted that my floor jack did indeed take a random ride across the shop 1 more time, this time I was under the truck. It did nothing more than release the hold it had on the axle, but still scary. On top of that my shop door randomly slammed shut, which has NEVER happened in my history out there. I am not a believer in the supernatural, but I really did feel like somebody or something really did not want these coils in!!!!!!!!!

End result, I was safe, and the Hulk rides GREAT!!!!!!!!!!

Afterthoughts......

So, if you did not read the above post you must read it before reading this one!!! Hulk gets new rear end poly bushings!!

If you read above, you will know that I had already torn out the rear end, and so I figured it was a good time to knock this long needed project out!!

Step #1: Remove all old bushings on 1 side of your choice. End link bushings take 11 mm socket, and the bar bushing a 14 mm socket to loosen the plate securing it, and then it folds right off:
IMG_3314.jpg~original

IMG_3311.jpg~original

IMG_3313.jpg~original

Step #2: Apply, generously, the supplied poly grease to each bushing and install each replacement bushing and washer in place of factory rubber bushings.

***Note: If proper grease is not applied, these bushings will SQUEAK!!!!!!!***

IMG_3312.jpg~original

IMG_3310.jpg~original

IMG_3315.jpg~original

IMG_3317.jpg~original

Step #3: Repeat the exact same procedure to the opposite side!!!! and you are done

With the new bushings on, it was time to put the whole back end back together!!!!!!!!!!!

Saga Ending!!

Again, this post goes with the previous 2....it was a long 2 days on the shop!!

It was time to put everything back together, and then I decided to mount a fire extinguisher on roll bar

Since the definition of insanity is to continue doing the same thing expecting a different result; I decided I need to CLEAN up the wheels so I did not scare myself half to death pulling them off again!! Took a hand file, rasp, and rat tail file to the insides of the wheels......

BEFORE:

IMG_3316.jpg~original

AFTER:

IMG_3319.jpg~original

I took the time to do a test run on each wheel with only 2 lugs made up to spec torque. Each wheel came off with ease, and there is no play. So let's pray this solved the problem!!!!!!!!!

Kiddie 10-BC Fire Extinguisher!

Mounted on roll bar opposide the mag light:

AND SOME FUN PHOTOS! YOU WILL ALSO NOTE THAT I TOOK OFF SPARE TIRE SWING AWAY AND THREW SPARE ON TOP OF THE HULK JUST TO SEE HOW I FEEL ABOUT IT.....

That sucks that your 4runner slid off of the jack. My 4runner did the same thing when we where putting the lift on. It's a little scay.

Wow ameining, how many things can possibly go wrong when installing a pair of coils? All of them, I guess, huh? I can't believe those wheels were stuck on there so tight.

Having a vehicle fall off the jack/stands has always been one of my least desirable occurrences so I always take extra precautions to make sure it doesn't happen. Was there any damage to the brake drum/axle from the fall?

RE the poly bushings... after awhile they start to squeak, no matter how much grease you put on them. Mine are pretty loud on the '97 (F/R) and I can hear them on the '01 (F). I think I'll probably go back to OEM rubber next time around.

RE the Fire Extinguisher, nice add. You'll be glad you have it if you ever need it.

RE the 861's... glad to see you got them installed finaly. I just recieved mine last week and they'll be going in tommorrow or tuesday (I'm going to try your OEM jack trick to help get them in... usually I just disconnect the panhard for extra droop).

I have a question for you on the coils... Did you make sure to install the A coil/B coil where they belong? One of them is for the D/S and the other is for the P/S. In looking at your pic, you can see one of them is talller (I assume the D/S coil), and in your "after" measurements, one side is a good bit higher.

Thanks!!

With respect to the coils, I was not under the impression that there was an 'A' and 'B' coil when I ordered them. However, I did notice that they were drastically different in height when I pulled them out of the box. I went and made the assumption that the taller one is the driver's side, and so that is how they are mounted. The reason the heights are not identical is due to the fact that I was not on completely level ground (I hope). Living in the middle of nowhere, and not fitting in the shop it is pretty tough to find a perfectly level surface. When I get to town in a week or so I will look for level ground, and look at the measurements.

One reason I was pretty excited to get these installed, was that the 7 wraps had ~30K on them and it appeared that the drivers side was sitting chronically lower than the passenger side. Thought that maybe the coils were the problem. Going to give them settling time, and see if it solved the problem.

Let's hope your install goes better than mine!!!!

Cheers

this thing is awesome. your rig one of my favs
the green black combo color is awesome..and plus you got the stock rims and i just love stock rims

Well thank you sir! I love the Jade as well, it blends in nicely with the evergreen forest where I live, and not a lot of people have it. From the beginning I had a vision of a black/green color scheme and I think it is working out well. Always something to be done though!!!!

So with the limited funding, I was held to minor changes. I pulled the trigger on a new intake, after some research and the fact that it was immediately available I went with the K&N. Dyno charts showed about 9 hp increase, and the sound is pretty impressive.

A pre-photo of the equipment to be installed. Total cost for this kit was less than $250 from Autozone

KN1.jpg~original

All of the parts associated with the project. All in all, this is a very easy install and the removal of the very blocky and restrictive stock intake makes for extra room all over the place as well as increased performance.

KN2.jpg~original

Basic tools and about 25 minutes of wrench time, and voila the old intake was gone

KN3.jpg~original

To not bore with the details of this basic upgrade, I will skip the details. If anybody is looking to do the install I will mention that the instructions that come WITH the intake are sufficient for anybody to perform the install. Here it is installed, nice and clean!

KN4.jpg~original

And of course, manually throwing the throttle to hear the change!!

KN5.jpg~original

How do you like that k&n? I've been looking into them myself

It's great, there is a nice little suction noise that you can hear, but is not obnoxious in my opinion. I would say that I did notice a bit more response to the throttle and increased gas mileage when I first installed. I did also tighten the throttle cable when in did this install, so the response may have been solely from that. Overall, with a lifetime warranty on the product, and the assumed 9 hp gain, I think it was well worth the money over doing the deck plate mod or other options.......

headlamps ftw! such an underrated thing to have, its a necessity in your car. I don't know how many times it has come in handy.

btw, glad you took a break after day 1, when things are going right for me, it tends to just get worse. drinking some booze and cooling off was a good idea!

nice work

Hope you enjoy the K&N. I have had one for years and enjoy it very much.

I usually put a bit more oil on. I prefer it to be a solid pink with no white showing.

Sweet, thats good to hear. You pretty much finalized my decision to put one in, thanks man!

Absolutely, I think you will not regret the investment. When you get into more modifications, refer to this thread or message me, I can hopefully help

Jada, I love your whole situation. The pups and everything, you rock. Thank you for touching in on my build.

Oil is oil on these in my opinion. I hear many people say that these need a huge amount of oil, but I always ask; why? There is never a concrete answer. I oil these like every part I have and have had no issues. .... .....

Rack updates

Ok so I had some time to play with the little stuff after the Tough Mudder!!

Some minor updates that have to do with the roof rack, as far as a write-up I apologize because Yakima parts come with more than you need to know......

Combination of a spare tire and hi-lift mount...........enjoy :)

Nice!
So when are you gonna reroute that exhaust pipe?! I want to see that.

And when did you get those tails? I dont remember you having those.

Cleaned up the brass for spare tire swing away

So as you guys may have picked up on, I have the CBI rear bumper w/swing away. Well with a full sized spare, I was unable to tow a trailer for my toys. So I tossed the spare on top. I had it ratchet strapped down until my previous post. However the CBI brass fitting was exposed and not enjoying the weather.......

So I cleaned up the parts and decided to put the cover back on until I decide to camp so hard that I need the extra cargo....
