Hunting Season!!!

Any dove shooter's getting ready for Sept 1?

Notice I said shooting not hunting, standing in an open field shooting flying rats is not really hunting.

My sons and I are headed to Yuma Az on Aug 31st.
yup, my son and daughter and I have our spot near queen creek we hit every year.

All my buddies are focused on dove season, because deer/turkey/elk follows dove, then duck season. I am debating on buying a mossberg 500 flex to shoot dove and duck with. I have been focused on deer and elk.

Do you run dogs on your dove hunts?
I recently just bought a new shotgun. I was debating between a benelli, Mossberg, and Remington. After doing a lot of research, I went ahead and paid the extra money for the benelli 12 guage supernova in camo. Haven't hunted turkey or duck before so I am excited to do so and have the 3 1/2" chamber.

October 1- Jan 15th here, it's nice. I think elk is the same.

The most fun I've ever had is an elk hunt out in New Mexico. My uncle is a guide out there and got me a tag. We were chasing them all week and couldn't get to them. Closest we got all week was a 1000 yards according to the range finder. I've made that shot on steel but didn't feel comfortable on an animal. The last day we didn't see anything. As we were headed back, a herd popped out of the brush and I popped one at 30 yards. 300 win mag had no issue at that distance:hunter: I'm all about archery now so hopefully I can get one with a bow.

There are some herds around here. My buddy walked past the elk to get to his deer stand he was going to sit in. Apparently as long as you're not trying to chase them off actively, or get to close to them, they won't run here.

When I searched I just found one on transporting your game. I figured it'd be nice to have an all around q and a thread/everything hunting thread. I even searched.

I have a big yeti to put it all in, I have to wait to quarter it until I get it checked in. Which kinda sucks.

You have a Yeti big enough to fit a bull elk? Impressive.

I cannot believe you have to "check in" your animals before quartering them. That's absurd. How do they expect you to pack out a bull elk? Even with horses or ATVs that's nearly impossible without perhaps a PERFECT situation, which every hunter knows, is never the case.

I've never taken an elk that could have been feasibly packed out without skinning and quartering where it dropped.

I don't think my yeti 75 will fit the whole thing lol. Most of the good size cows here are 300, and a solid size bull is 600. How's that compare to New Mexico or Kentucky? I'm figuring 600 gutted, will get me to the 5-550 range. Maybe closer to 5. I figure if I quarter it down, and did a quick field butcher it might, MIGHT fit.

I think my boss and one person helped him load his cow after he gutted it.

Got one once. 30' off the road. Used 2 trucks rope over the cab of shitty truck. Drug elk after gutting in to shitty truck. With nicer truck pulling rope. Easiest recovery ever for me.

Oh, are you talking Tule elk, maybe? I hunted Roosevelts up until a couple years ago and those things are like horses. A solid bull with push 1000lbs. We're now hunting Rocky Mountains and the BIG boys are typically around 800lbs.

Yeah, my brother's first elk season he had a cow tag. Him, my dad, and I were walking down a logging road, behind a closed gate, and a herd of elk crossed about 50 yards in front of us. The last elk, a MONSTER of a cow, stopped in the middle of the road and presented the easiest shot I have ever witnessed. My brother (fresh hunter's safety graduate) stepped to the side of the road so his bullet wouldn't go flying down the road, but rather into the berm on the side of the road, and dropped it. About 30 seconds later some hillbilly with a cherry picker custom mounted in the back of his old pickup came around the corner and offered to load it up and drive it out. 5 minutes later the cow was loaded, and we rode in the back of his truck to the gate. He hopped out, pushed it open (apparently it wasn't locked, lol...), backed up to my dad's truck, and transferred the elk into his bed.

At the point it was MAYBE 30 minutes after day light. Quickest/easiest hunt of my life.

That (or anything close) has NEVER happened again. In 2009 we shot two bulls in the bottom of an overgrown clear cut. Two miserable days in the Oregon Coast Range later, and about 16 trips up and down the clear cut, I told myself I'd never shoot another elk in that area. Then the next year I did it again. That was the last Roosevelt I ever even took a shot at. Never again.

No we shoot on open farm fields on tribal land between a grove and a canal.

I give my boys 20 shells to reach their 15 bird limit. Shot selection is key, we see guys go thru boxes of shells taking shots they have no hope in hell to make.

Shooter of the day is whoever gets the dove to helicopter nearest your bucket.

Ever done a hog hunt with a knife, now that's fun. Went to south Texas to do that.

Yes something about the blue mountains and box canyons. Look there's a bull down there. PEW! Never doing that again.

I harvested two deer last season, plan to do the same in October. I quartered one and put it in two ice chests, the wrapped it in tarp and threw it on the roof rack. This year I am hoping to have a large ice chest like a grizzly or yeti or something by then.

P.S. isn't there already a hunting thread
yep, there is. I know I posted it in. ohwell.

ive been getting ready, got the camper all set. just have a few small things to deal with. we are taking it up on Saturday, season starts the 1st.
it is a bit warm yet, but the forecast shows it to be cooling down the next few days. been a few dry years, hopefully I can make it happen this year!

Then maybe we can get the mods to merge the two threads? RonMAIDEN Uneek momo.75 That way we're not wasting space?

So the seasons have opened in a few places. I haven't gotten anything yet. I spent all weekend last weekend hunting elk and logged what felt like 1000 miles on my feet. Here where I am the herds are Rocky Mountain elk. I had a 30 yard encounter with a pretty good size 6x6 bull, and a mature cow. I would have taken either, but it didn't work out like that. Oh well, has anyone else gotten anything?

my early season for deer and elk has come and gone. I was in animals quite a bit, and also hiked my ass off. but just couldn't make it happen.

I snuck in on a coyote once too. that was fun.
the elk were bugling a lot, it was a great time to be out in the woods.

now its time to get ready for the late season. should be a much better chance to get something then.

I'm trying to get into pheasant/ quail hunting this season. Would like a O/U (so I can also get into trap), but the versatility of a pump or semi-auto is making me reconsider. Especially if I want to get into duck hunting too. I have a feeling this is going to be an expensive hobby.

Somebody find it for me and I'll merge them. I'll just be like most lol.

1engineer here is the other hunting thread if we could merge them together. Guess this explains why I couldn't find it when I searched.

If you could merge them it would be great.

Mentioned you in the other thread. It took me a bit but I found it.

On another actual hunting note. I am curious on some of yous guys take on when you see unethical hunting? I hunt an area where the game management is a little out of date, and the fish and game guys are undermanned. So there's not as much checking as there should be. I, as well as others I know have found deer carcasses that had obviously been shot, but they were too small to claim. Or in some cases was just a spike, so you can't hunt any more bucks if you shoot a spike where I'm at. One even had its head and only its head cut off. Other people shooting guns into rattling brush, wounding elk, and not putting in the work to find them. Oh, and most of the time they are wounding elk due more in part to lack of understanding their equipment, or just saying f it, maybe if I shoot it in the leg with a bow it will eventually die. Just want other people's thoughts. I'm pretty much to the point where I'm ready to just hunt another area as a whole.
