Oh, are you talking Tule elk, maybe? I hunted Roosevelts up until a couple years ago and those things are like horses. A solid bull with push 1000lbs. We're now hunting Rocky Mountains and the BIG boys are typically around 800lbs.
Yeah, my brother's first elk season he had a cow tag. Him, my dad, and I were walking down a logging road, behind a closed gate, and a herd of elk crossed about 50 yards in front of us. The last elk, a MONSTER of a cow, stopped in the middle of the road and presented the easiest shot I have ever witnessed. My brother (fresh hunter's safety graduate) stepped to the side of the road so his bullet wouldn't go flying down the road, but rather into the berm on the side of the road, and dropped it. About 30 seconds later some hillbilly with a cherry picker custom mounted in the back of his old pickup came around the corner and offered to load it up and drive it out. 5 minutes later the cow was loaded, and we rode in the back of his truck to the gate. He hopped out, pushed it open (apparently it wasn't locked, lol...), backed up to my dad's truck, and transferred the elk into his bed.
At the point it was MAYBE 30 minutes after day light. Quickest/easiest hunt of my life.
That (or anything close) has NEVER happened again. In 2009 we shot two bulls in the bottom of an overgrown clear cut. Two miserable days in the Oregon Coast Range later, and about 16 trips up and down the clear cut, I told myself I'd never shoot another elk in that area. Then the next year I did it again. That was the last Roosevelt I ever even took a shot at. Never again.
